Nvidia TNT2 Ti Card & XP

Ever since I upgraded my old TnT2 card (quite some time ago) to a GeForce2 Ti I've experienced a nasty problem when running dxdiag. As soon as I run any of the graphics tests the monitor clicks & turns black, as per usual when changing modes, however it then hangs and the monitor light flashes. I managed to get around this a while ago using some Nvidia refresh rate fix that seemed to quiet things down for a short while. Now I'm back to square one again, I recently re-formatted my machine and put on Nvidia's brand spanking new drivers and get exactly tho old problem, hanging :mad:

Any ideas?

What motherboard and chipset?

Sorry for the lack of information.

It's a MSI KT3 Ultra motherboard using the Via KT333 chipset.

The GeForce2 Ti is an Asus v7700 Ti

Both have the latest bios updates. The Nvida driver is 42.42.
DirectX version 9. XP has sp1 installed and is up to date with Windows Update files.

This has been going on for a while, just couldn't be arsed to sort it out till now.

I'm a bit of an update junkie, yup I've loaded the latest hyperions along with updating the detonators. ****er just doesn't want to play.

I used to use a program called nvrefreshfix or something similar, this solved the prob before but I can't seem to find an updated version.

There's always the standard Via-based list:

"Assign IRQ to VGA" = enabled

USB ports = enabled

fast writes = disabled

initialize AGP first (or choose AGP video as opposed to PCI)

set AGP frame buffer to maximum



Worse-case scenario; set AGP slot to 2X or even 1X for stability.

I don't believe the GeForce 2 is DX9 capable so I would think it probably would hang since it doesn't support DX9. If you can, uninstall DX9 and go back to DX8.1 but I think you might be looking at a format to go back to DX 8.1.

I have the MSI KT3 Ultra2 mobo. I have a GeForce 2 Pro fro Asus. Everything else is the same as you except I have dx 8.1 not 9. I use the default Microsoft drivers. My dxdiag tests run ok. However if I run my refresh at 100mhz my Direct draw tests wont run. At 85hz it runs ok. I have had video problems in the past with the default bios Optimized settings. I changed them to what Zerotech mentioned and I have had no problems. Based on all this it looks like Dx 9 is the culprit.

As much as I would like to think that Dx9 is the problem I forgot to mention that the machine used to do this under Dx8.1

Did you have problems running DX 8.0? If you didn't, there's no real need to update to DX 8.1 unless an application demands it. Most games nowadays require 8.0 so if you don't have to update, don't.

well may be... if you talking about refresh rate.. your monitor probably can't support what ever refresh rate you are using... may be.. try changing the type of monitor.. instead of default to a plug and pray one.. then.. set try chaging the refresh rate of the monitor...

Are you sure that the geforce2 can run a refresh rate of 100Hz at your current resolution? btw what is your resolution? I say this because I have personally seen a problem similar to this. Either your monitor or vid card will not support such a high refresh rate. I would leave it at 85Hz if that works fine. 100Hz doesnt really make a huge difference from 85Hz. my .02!
