yeah I know I'm old and forgetful......
I have a machine that was dual booting with two HDDs....customer formated D: with XP on it and Win98 is on C:
How do I get rid of the boot.ini file? All I get is HAL errors with what I've tried....just want to boot to 98....

Personally I'm not a dual booting kinda guy so I wouldn't know. I just felt obligated to post SOMETHING since my name is up there in that list. :D

Removing Windows NT from a Windows 95/98 Dual-Boot Installation
PS. You don't need NooNoo, you just gotta search the MSKB!
You will need to do a bit more than just nuke the boot.ini file to remedy this. When NT4/2000/XP are installed in a dual-boot environment, they actually re-write the boot sector on the primary hard drive. This requires you to re-SYS the drive
Quickest way to get around this (based on the assumption that the XP volume has been deleted) is to boot up from a 98 setup disk, SYS the C: drive, and then delete the following files from the root of C:
bootsect.dos
boot.ini
ntldr
ntdetect.com
You will also need to modify the msdos.sys file, using a text editor, so that it correctly references the Windows 98 installation. Here is a quick & dirty example:

P.S Shamus I quit bookmarking this stuff, I have a 19" monitor at 1024 and ALL the categories now have to scroll off the screen.... :eek2:
