Windows 2k Profiles/Domains

Some of my users have extensively personalized profiles on their standalone Win2k Pro machines. We purchased a Win2k Server and when I joined the first machine to the domain, that user lost all their desktop information, links on favorites, all Email settings from Outlook express, etc. Basically their whole profile went away.

I understand that when you log into a Domain, you use the profile stored on the server for that account name. Is there something I can do to prevent this for the other machines? Can I copy the user's profile from the local PC to the server before joining it to the Domain so it will be in place when I join the PC?

The profile isn't stored on the server, unless the user is logging in with a roaming profile, in that case there you go.

I think what you have happening, is that they used to login locally to a workgroup, now login to a domain. Essentially you now have a different user name, even if you used the same user name. You can copy profiles, follow these instructions...just remember to copy the old profile to the new domain name user ID profile...

When we first went to 2000, we ran into similar problems. Ya_know looks like he found the steps for you to use.

There is a big difference between username@workstation and username@domain. Two different users entirely. Watch that when setting special permissions!

P.S. Don't go for roaming profiles unless you REALLY want to. Extensively changed profiles can eat up bandwidth while loading, especially slower networks.

I totally agree. Roaming profiles are really only useful for terminal services, imho.
