Hard Drive Connections
I have a ancient Dell laptop to fix and i need to load the hard drive from
my pc.
The hard drive is a Fujitsu vd981 and i have the ide connector
to make the link.
Problem is which way round----dont fancy getting pin1
mixed up with the supply pins at the other end.
Have a guess if your51% sure as thats better than my 50/50
Thanks

I believe you're talking about an adapter to connect a 2.5" laptop IDE drive to a standard 40-pin IDE connector.
The side FURTHER AWAY from the power connector should be aligned with the red stripe (pin 1) on the IDE ribbon cable. Note that after you connect the plug to the 2.5" hard drive, if you place the combination on a flat level surface, the drive should sit level and not on an angle. If you face the plug, pin 1 should be on your right hand side, while the power connector should be on your left-hand side.

And look carefully at the adaptor piece..mine has a small arrow on the top for pin one..the other side from the power connector just as Macgyver says..and the words 2.5" hdd adaptor on the top..which should be up when the label on the hard drive is up (good thing, too..because mine are equal top and bottom..they don't sit on an angle when plugged in backwards..you can ask one of my techs who managed to burn out two..not one but two..new 20 gb drives last week. He and I are having a little talk later this week:D )

Thanks for the help.
Yes Macgver thats the connector.
The important thing now is when i call a hard drive (up the
right way) is with the container facing up and not the pcb.
Is that right?
I hate laps and my wife buried me with this job-----i need friends.

yep..circuit board to the bottom..pin1 is on the right looking at it from the end where the pins are

Well no joy-could not feel or hear any vibration from the hd.
Good news is that its ok.
The actual hard drive goes through a connector that is much reduced in length and the last pins on the right are not used
so i married up to this so i dont where to go from here.
Back in the Dell body and its fine.
I shall never like laps.
