We have a customer who is on his 5th cdrw. The doors will stop opening due to the drive belt being broken (appears slightly dry rotted. Anyone have any input on this problem? We have used Asus, Mitsumi and I think we even tried one other brand (maybe benq). Anyway....you get the picture.

BTW - This all has been within a 3 month or so period.
Are the drives subjected to unusual heat where they are mounted? maybe try moving them so they are not on top of the machine or have a space between?
Ya know I did think of that...however....the drives are stacked ...the cdrw is the 2nd bay from top (AOpen KF45A case) but I just noticed that the reader (top bay) is starting to dryrot also. I am trying to find a heat source (maxtor 17gb below the burner) but cannot find anything generating any real heat...not anymore than usual. I'll continue to look for heat problems though.

If there's no obvious heat source? Corrosive stuff somehow's ?? I had a customer who's mother sprayed his cdr with glass cleaner - inside and out ..... she said she could see dust !!! :rolleyes:
"appears slightly dry rotted" -excessive wearing can look like this sometimes ... aggravated very quickly by folk who pull push drawers open, my six year old could break one in about six minutes ..... :D :D :D
Or just a duff batch of cdrs all the same ? or from the same place...?
I don't think that is the case here.....this guy is a long time customer...but ya never know.

might want to check the power supply 12 volt and make sure it isn't too much above 12 volts..excessive voltage supplied to the drive while you are burning can cause a lot of heat too

maybe customer found a cheap way to get new and faster cdrw,just a thought,it strikes me as being odd

If he's using a synthetic lubricant on the gears, that could break down the rubber.
He wasn't looking for a new cdrw...the first one that went out was a month old (52x). It looks like it turned out to be a heat problem. In the hundreds of pc's...probably more....i've worked on there hasn't been one like this before. I guess alot of the older drives used gears instead of being belt driven.

From the comments, I had a huch it could have been a breakdown of the rubber somehow.
I have a hard time believing that heat could break these belts down that quick. Over a longer duration, sure, but not in three months.

IMHO this might be a case that all things come together:
a. Heat
b. Lubricants
c. dust
d. Humidity
e. HIgher Voltage / Amp
f. dumn (user) customer
Therefore it will be very unlikely to isulate the problem :p .
It might be that the customer is trying to get the newest Drive though ;)
