I am trying to find a replacement motherboard for a Gateway computer. I want to be able to use the present memory, powersupply, processor, ect. Tech support at Gateway says the original mb is a "Jabil-Taylor Pentium II BX motherboard" and Gateway doesn't sell them. Does anyone know know where I can purchase this or a compatible mb?

stop it, step away from the pc and build a new one, why are you going to spend money on old equipment, you can build a badass pc now a days for like 400 for everything, if you dont know how to build one then buy a gw or dell 699 deal and get warranty!!!! even if you do get a new mb for it the system is still out of warranty and gateway will not support you for anythign trust me i worked there.....do your self a favor buy a new pc we are all using p4's and amd xp's over the 2 ghz mark now treat yourself :)
You're going to have difficulty finding anything compatible with that processor new..you might be able to on e-bay, but ..like everything else there..you pays your money and you takes your chance. PII motherboards are rare beasts..I'm inclined to agree with Kineda on this one..although you can build something with much less than a 2 ghz processor and still be ten steps up from where you are.

That's not what he asked.......not everyone has money to upgrade.
Ebay would be the best bet for older parts like that.

If you don't feel like risking e-bay then what about a local computer 'fixer' (small shop, field techie?) they are likely to have just what you want sat on a shelf gathering dust.....
And if it is a normally configured socket 7 board..(and what gateway of that era really is?) you might be able to find a compatible board at one of the discount houses..like computer renaissance
Old brand-name mobos are not that cheap, a standard ATX one might noy even fit in the case (i've had such experience). Plus memory is most likely proprietary (and therefore expensive). Your best bet is to get a new case (if needed), mobo+cpu+some quality ram (you can even get all of them for $200) and re-use whatever you can from the old computer if it is worth it (video, hdd, modem, nic, floppy, sound card).
I like saving money too, but what you are trying to do is like replacing the engine on a 15year-old car with 200k+ miles on it...

it was only at $9.99 +$6.00 shipping. I don't know the seller so i can not vouch for his/her quality and ebay behavior. Also juding from the aution pic it seems to be a standard ATX mobo so you may be able to replace it with a more common name brand part.
I tried to do what you're trying to do. I had an old Gateway P233 that I tried to save as much as I could from to build a new computer.
So I went out and bought a socket 7 motherboard, went from a 233 to an AMD 500, and kept most of my old stuff. 110 bucks.
Funny thing though. When I did this I had to add more RAM because my new ram was PC100, not PC66. I had to add it to get the full effect of my new processor. Otherwise it would be running at 2/3 of normal speed. 80 bucks
Then I made a discovery about video cards. AGP became the new standard and my old PCI just didn't make it. 35 bucks.
Then when I had my new AGP card I discovered that I could play alot more games that I previously couldn't. Problem was that my old Hard Drive was too small to hold them. 40 bucks.
My old sound card didn't exist because Gateway sold me onboard sound. So I had to get a new video card. Of course I wanted one that would last so I got a Soundblaster. 35 bucks
I had an old 13 inch monitor. After all the money I spent on my new system so far it would be a shame to waste it on that dinky little thing. So a new monitor, 115 bucks.
My modem still worked but it was an ISA modem. My new motherboard didn't take ISA, only PCI. $25.
When I got my new system I wasn't satisfied with my case which was a desktop. I wanted a tower because it would be easier to change parts. So I took everything out and moved it to the new one. 45 bucks.
Around this same time my floppy gave out and I needed new one. 15 bucks.
My old Zip drive was ancient and I wanted to transfer CD's to CD's, 70 bucks.
The moral of the story is that I spent all this money just to get a computer that used an AMD 500 processor. About 600 dollars. When if, I had planned ahead and anticipated my needs better I could have gotten a P4 or P3 system for about a hundred dollars less than I paid.
In other words you might spend alot more money than you are to trying to save, by using the same type of motherboard. Technologies change and prices do to. Take this into account
Thinking ahead might save you some serious bucks and get you a better system.
You can buy a ne P3 or P4 motherboard combo with onboard video and onboard sound four 150-200 bucks. RAM would cost more. You can always sell your old stuff on Ebay. You might be able to keep your modem and monitor, CDROM and Floppy
-Total bill around 300-350 and you'd have a better system.

Ouch that hurt!!!! :sad: yeah i could say exactly where he could buy his parts with pretty links and everything but if i did i wouldn't be able to sleep at night. i worked for gateway i know how they do business and how they support their product. trust me if there is a cheap way to do anythign i would suggest it, but the fact of the matter is 2 things : support and warranty.Quote:

who do you think will support this system now that he added a 3rd party mobo? gateway will laugh their assess off as they point their finger across the street to compusa, comp will say they cant touch it that it is proprietary and so goes the vicisious circle of hate. lets just say he gets the mobo and frys it installing it then what? lets say it ends up not being compatible with other components then what? lets say he buys an old amd board and all of the new drivers crash his hard drive then what?? there is a lot to consider for someone who probably isnt that knowledgable with pcs. if he doesnt know what he is doing than he is screwing himself in the longrun, he will have to take it to a 3rd party tech and have deep pockets for anything because that system is out of warranty and has no one to support it.

how long of a warranty do u think u will get for an old mobo? lets say everything goes good on th install and he runs for 2 months and gets whacked by lightning thru the telco line and it takes the mobo with it, now what? another old mobo?? come on!!!
do this guy a favor stop suggesting the old equipment you are just setting him up for something bad to happen and later on down the road he will just regret not getting a new system, i wouldnt suggest it if i didnt think it was the right thing to say. and honestly if he knew what he was doing there would be no cause for this forum so be nice to him dont suggest something you would tell your own parent to undertake...

After reading most of your half-a$$ed answers on the forum, I would imagine that you are yet fairly young, or have failed to grow up.
Your having worked at Gateway has no bearing on what was asked. I have worked a a few places (think software giant), I know how they work as well. That has no bearing on this either.
He didn't ask for advice on a new system. He asked for a replacemement board. He was shown where one might be. I am quite sure that he is aware that new parts/systems are avaiable.
As I said, not everyone has more than a few bux to buy parts with. While doing custom computer builds for a white box manufacturer, I also deal with customers that have little or no money. I just know how it is. I normally have decent used parts around to sell cheap or give away.
Giving the information that was asked for is not cause for insomnia nor any type of bad feeling.
Wow, what a discussion! Thanks to all who joined in. Upon doing a www search using mamma.com I found an exact replacement for $69.00.

dvjduck has found what he wanted for $69 a replacement board, now Doc knew that, I knew that, Geoscomp knew that, well pretty much everyone except Kineda & you knew that .... I shan't persist. Stop digging you are just making the hole harder to get out of.....
