People say that, they also say that spam is no worse than TV commercials so why get all upset over them?
Well, three reasons:
First I use dial-up. Every time I get a spam I have to change my screen name, which may take awhile just to make sure I didn't get a message that was really important. So they're a time waster
Second, if a TV commercial is deceptive they can be taken to court and put off the air. Not so with spam. Some spam is downright crooked, TV descramblers, loose weight overnight, free trip to the Bahamas, millions to be made in 'email advertising' etc. Because it is crooked it can take advantage of people who are naieve and vulnerable, IE. , the old, the sick, the poor etc.
Thirdly, alot of it is pornographic. Once I had my neighbor's 10-year daughter with me and we were on the computer. All the sudden I get a porno spam. I don't want to repeat what it said in the title line, and the moderator of this forum would probably edit it if I did, but it was pretty bad. I don't think kids should be exposed to that kind of thing.
Well, that's my rant about spam!! I just hate it and I think spammers should be shot along with all telephone solicitors.
:D
PS. ....and I used to be a telephone solicitor. It was my first job. Not any more.

PS. Nice Cat, how'd you get it to take a shower?
i just think that more fuss is made about it than is neccessary.
oh no, i got another mail about penis enlargement what should i do?
delete it.
so what?
ps why do yo need to change your screen name when you get spam?
I have seven screen names. Over the years each screen name has been recorded by spammers. Therefore, each screen name gets spam.Quote:

Right now I use AOL(something that will soon be rectified thanks to Trueswitch). In order to answer the mail for that screen name I have to switch screen names. Its a real pain to do sometimes because if AOL is busy, which is frequently, it can take several minutes and even loose a connection in the process.
It really is a royal pain:sad:
really, you are emphasizing my point...Quote:

if its such a pain, dont do it. delete the spam and go about your business...
I'm with you dude, it takes an extra 30 seconds to delte 30-50 spams that I don't want. Less time if they are all in my spam box. They are rather amusing sometimes too!!!
doesnt AOL have a anti spam ? like emails that you can select as spam and AOL will not deliver them to you ? i think spam comes from the websites you visit.. so what sites are you going to, if you dont like spams ?? besides.. cheezmonkey is right.. just delete the spam and go your marry way..
question for CLEETUS.. i've been meaning to ask you.. what the deal with the days you got left ? are you buying or getting something you been wanting ?? :D
cleetus and i are forming our own time wasting, anti spam patrols.... armed with nothing but three keys, ctrl, a, and del....
ctrl+a, del
AOL? ctrl+a, del
compuserve? ctrl+a, del
ad infinitum
I said it once before, now you have to wait until the time is up and the massive celebration begins!!!!!Quote:

Obviously , you're end users. Admins understand the problem with spam. Say you got a mail server. It's job is to deliver the mail to about 500 employees. well that server would probably be on some sort of broadband all the time which YOUR company pays by the amount of data downloaded. Well if 75% of your server's resources are spent accepting and sorting and sending out spam instead of legit email like it's supposed to do , there's a problem. then your employees are spending time deleting the spam, about 2 seconds for each piece of spam. Well in business, time is money, and when your inbox has over 75 spam emails a day, it adds up. the bandwith costs adds up because most spam contains graphics other things that take time to download. then there's the spam with the illegal kiddie porn or rape porn that can get your company into legal hot water.
As for the analogy that spam is like tv commercials, BS! You pay for your cable contract which stipulates that you will get commercials or programming from the cable company. your ISP contract doesn't say that you will be getting adverts from them. and the spammers don't work for the ISP. Put it this way, would you like a spammer to jam your tv signal in the middle of your show and not leave until you CLICKED HERE!
and those are just the little arguments against it. the final one is it's your computer and you should be able to decide what comes into it. An attitude like " oh just delete it and forget about it" is what allows microsoft to build software so buggy and charge tons of $$ for it or make licenses agreements that are completely immoral and/or illegal and allows the spammers to send out 1000's of email to your account. Cuz they bank on people not caring and not going after them.
Um, I am a Novell admin, my exchange is taken care of else where, and after talking to my exchange admin and others, it is all taken care of relativly easily. If I notice things coming through here, I have a service I notify, and bammo, takin care of at the business level. As far as home/personal email, IT DON'T COST NUTTIN MORE TO PRESS DELETE. So please, get off of your high horse. The problem with spam in the corp environment is that these idiots are to stupid to not open something, nobody truly understands any bit of time management unless it is on their calendar or their secretary pencils it in. The problem is that nobody, anywhere takes any personal responsibility for anything, and nobody is willing to ignore minor nuisencanses any more.
I guess I will make a sweeping generalization about you now, obviously you spend most of your time behind the server in a closed room rather than out there in the office taking care of everyone from the lowly mail room to the entire executive branch of your company.
It ain't fun to bicker like this is it. We are just having fun on a potentially potent topic, while also expressing a need for everyone to relax and take some of that personal responibility once in a while.
i agree with cleetus.. besides.. if you are seating behind an exchange server deleting spam.. you are not managing your exchange too well
Responsibility? Who can ignore an ad for penis enlargements, that has pictures of before and after. On occasion, someone here in the office will get one of these, and forward it to me, asking me to do something about it. Imagine my surprise when Suzie Rotencrotch sends me a picture of a penis at work. It is shocking! Let me tell you. Then, I now have to devise a way to prevent her from being offended by this type of spam, and in the mean time, I am still shivering from the burned in images…I don’t need that Sh!t at work. I have Web Browsing and Windriving to do!Quote:
