I downloaded the updated version of MSN Messenger, even though I have Windows Messenger, and I can't get the program to totally exit. Even though there's no icon located by the clock, I always find msmsgs.exe running in the background in the task manager. Is there some way to toally exit this program without uninstalling it?

If I recall, in the beginning when I installed XP Pro at home (twice) to turn off the MSN Messenger I opened it up, and somewhere in there I found the option to prevent the automatic startup of the app. I can't for the life of me recall where it was; if you poke around I am sure you will find it within the app. Once you turn off that option, you shouldn’t see it again.
Someone else here will have a better explanation I am sure.
Open MSN Messenger, Tools, Options, Preferrences, and there's the spot where you can instruct Messenger not to start with Windows. However, I already know about this option, have Messenger set to NOt start with Windows, but the bugger still boots with Windows; and it's active from moment 1.
What's the deal? Is MSN trying to show users that we're forced to allow this nonsense to happen? I like using MSN/Windows Messenger, but I don't like applications forced upon me.
Hmmm....I think I heard someone say Linux....
Try a search on the open forums for anything with MSN Messenger. I know there were a few threads on this very topic many months ago...

Would you believe that even after I've removed disabled, and adjusted everything recommened, I still see msmsgs.exe appearing under the Processes tab when you enter the Task Manager? What must one do to stop this? I don't like much starting up with Windows, and I don't like software that can't be controlled.

after going to run->msconfig and disabling msmsgs.exe
and doing the preferences thing it still shows up as a process in task manager
There has to be a way to stop this.

Here is XPAntispy this kills it.
Following ronin's 2nd link takes care of it. The service you are trying to stop is not windows messenger (the microsoft IM program), but the messenger SERVICE. It is what allows NET SEND and administrative alerts to work between workstaion and server, and between workstations.
The NET SEND has been exploited as of late, as most people with broadband now, especiialy if you leave your pc on all night... come back and have 200 messages on your desktop!
My favorite is the message telling me to go to such and such a website, pay $20 to never see these messages again! I imagine the just give you the aobve steps! (makes me want to start doing that myself! could make a fortune! :) )
This sounds funny, but I've followed my own suggestion and didn't achieve satisfaction. I think I'm switching over to Trillian for the mere fact that it wasn't created by Microsoft.
