I cannot install a printer or driver to an SP3 Win2K system. I have checked the local security settings inlocal policies, all seems OK. So far an Epson and Fine print refused. Epson said there was something abnormal with Windows, FinePrint nearly completes and then the message above. I'd really welcome some help on this.
Are you logged in as Adminstrator?
Have you tried installing it in safe mode?
Administrator - Yes
Safe Mode - No but I'll try now and post back
Results -
Safe mode
Using wizard - out of resources. Print subsystem unavaialble
Using Installer - Installer started and then just stopped, nothing on screen, processes etc.
System 448mb ram, P3, win 2k sp3,agnitum firewall.
No obviously significant entries in Event viewer. System stable, fully patched.
Would welcome further thoughts
Rule out software 'weirdness' & any permissions issues & try a.n.other printer ..... just to see if that works ....

'Spooler' service is started ? It won't let you install anything otherwise .... I think ....
Spooler service started. A.N.other printer refuses to load.
Software weirdness possible but I've just run a chkdsk /r in case of problems. I'm stuck.

So at least we know 'any' printer ... not just a dislike of Epson ... which I can appreciate !!! :D
Perhaps you have some 'corrupted' files .... SFC next ! ... put the kettle on while it does that ....
USB or Parallel?
FSC: Blue screen. ISDN card. Twice. Another problem
USB Printers. Fineprint though a printer driver.
Other printers on USB no problems. Frequently used.
Epson C62 refused to load.
Canon BJC failed to load on parallel.
Driver signing policy OK
Now very stuck.

Decode that for me : do you mean sfc (system file checker) results in BSOD .... & why/what is isdn to do with the price of fish ?
Then you are saying 'usb printers work' but not some parallel & you are definately always using WHQL drivers for them ...?
This is a client w2k machine not some server ?
Do you actually have an ISDN card? Errors from that where a sign of magistr or one of its variants
If you have antivirus I would recommend you do an online scan at panda . Your virus checker may be compromised.

Yes BSOD came during SFC, This caused by an ISDN card file and not apparently directly related. Twice.
I have tried to install printers on parralel and USB with no joy. I use the machine to test printers. Exisitng printer on USB on machine working without problem.
This iis a standalone machine not networked
The only reference in event viewers to printers is to a Winfax driver (long removed).
Whatever is 'upseting' SFC wants fixing first ... even if its something to do with ISDN ... you'd be amazed at dependancies .... There actually is an ISDN modem/adapter somewhere?
British Telecom Speedway Card. This has been in the system 12 months plus predating this problem of 6 weeks standing I thought I just had a fluke then but only realised that it was a real problem at first post. I am working on the ISDN now. I am sure you are right about dependencies.

Missed your reply. Forgive. I've been deep into MSDTC problem that emerged during all this. Cleared
System clear of viruses and the like. Fully patched, updated virus protection (Panda PLatinum, Outpost Firewall)
I've restored and reinstalled all ISDN files etc.
