Hello all... its been a while. Anyway I have a problem. I am new to networking and I have a simple question. Can I use Windows roming profiles on a network using only a workgroup and not a domain? The network server is a Windows 2K pro, and the other 11 computers are all XP (pro and home) if that matters. Please any info will help, Thank you.
No. The security context from one machine to another would be different (trying to logon to a machine with an ntuser.dat from another machine would fail).
How do I go about creating a domian for this network? I know its a stupid question... but I am still learning about this stuff.
A domain requires a version of 2000/2003 server and active directory. You run dcpromo on the server to make it a domain controller. There are a couple important items like a static IP and working DNS that need to be addressed before you do it though..
Take no offense, but if you have to ask this question, you don't have enough knowledge in the industry yet. Take some classes, get some books, study with friends, get a job that will train you. Then you will learn everything you need to know.Quote:

Take no offense, but, what do you think I am doing here? I am asking questions, I am reading books, I do have a that is training me. I know that I'm not ready otherwise I wouldn't be asking these questions. Do you think that I just walked in a company, took the job as IT manager and now expect everything to just come to me? It is plain to see that you need to get more training, schooling, or books to fill your shelves at home. You asked a very entry-level question, and I for one can’t answer with tongue in cheek. If you were joking it would have been funny, but you are not. That was the reason I told you not to take offense, because I suggested constructively that you needed more experience. Instead you took offense.
For you to know about roaming profiles but not know how a domain is born classifies you as a user. If you don’t like that…tough. When you learn more, you can be considered a tech or Net admin, until then don’t get short with me, user.
