Hi guys,
I just have a problem that meeds a solution ASAP, how do you install windows 2003 server using the upgrade version but in dos mode?
First try booting directly to the install CD-ROM! If that won't work then you need to make a set of 6 boot floppies.
I can't vouch for server 2003 but they work fine for XP.
In windows (any version post 95) insert the XP CD ROM, browse to the bootdisk folder & use the utility. Although the floppy images are browsable, they cannot be accessed from DOS but the DOS install is painless with the floppies, if a little slow!

:D
i know about the boot floppies, but will it have the upgrade version in dos mode?
when you boot from the cd, there's no upgrade option, the reason why i'm asking about this, is that I tried upgrading from the windows 2000 server screen to win2003 enterprise server, but the installation failed, with errors regarding bad installation cd. now, when i boot to win2000 server, i get the blue screen of death. I cannot do a clean install because the server is running LIVE oracle database. I tried repair using win2k server, but now its asking me a compaq smart array driver, for which I tried several versions of, but its not accepting. I also tried Win2003 datacenter but since the upgrade was done using the enterprise 2003, the upgrade continuation is only for enterprise, I cannot continue using the datacenter cd.
I also have a tape backup, but how can I restore in dos mode?
please help!
thanks
Uhhh you ran a 2k3 upgrade on a production server? :eek2: :eek2:
I hope you have backups - because it sounds like you might have to format and install again.
Exactly what blue screens are you getting?
I can't quite remember, but it stated somthing like running out of memory ... and or... bad windows installation cd.
I do have a tape backup, but how do I restore from dos? or do i do a clean install, and then restore the backup from windows? are all the paths and software gonna be in the right place?
Must be an OEM CD-ROM! I have noticed that OEM XP CD-ROM's do not have the upgrade option (no upgrade folder on the CD) but retail ones do. The OEM CD's I have here also don't have the bootdisk folder! From DOS with a retail CD you do get the upgrade option!
Otherwise you seem to have a problem! I may have read it wrongly but did you run the update on an operational server??
You say you have a tape backup. Is this a full system backup or simply a data backup? If a full system, depending on the backup software used, the tech who ran it should have created a boot floppy to initialise a full restore. This worked fine here (using the native Win 2000 backup software & the system restore floppy created when the backup was originally done) the one time we needed to do it.

The system admin should have all this information. What was it backed up with?Quote:

yup, production server. but how else can i upgrade it?
i do have the complete backup on tape but don't have the bootdisk that's supposed to be created in MS backup.
anyway, after trying to repair using win2000 server cd, i booted up now, but with a little problem with some service, so trying to restore from tape now on MS backup window. is this ok, or do i create a boot floppy from ms backup and restore from dos?
Definitely create the restore floppy but if the backup you're doing now works OK, you should'nt need to restore from DOS!
Good Luck!
John
how come
when I start the restore, and during the "tape loading in process... Click cancel to stop." after the progress bar gets full, the progress bar states "Please check the Removable Storage Management MMC"? and when I look there,"under state heading"waiting" , under operation hdng "mount", under library "off-line media"? but this is the correct tape, I have two actually of the same day, but same msg for both.
please help, this is a compaq proliant 380 generation 2 by the way.

. . . . . don't run an essentially beta server product in production! :D
