Does Linux Red Hat 8 take advantage of having a second processor? I'm asking about the operating system specifically, not applications. Someday, I hope to build a Linux firewall. The antique server I plan on using has dual processors, but I do not know if Linux takes advantage of the second processor. Thanks.
I am not a Linux geek, but as far as I know, any recent distro supports dual processors. I've run Red Hat, Mandrake and SUSE distros on my dual PIII 850 box without any problems. Current new toy is Mandrake 9.1 , running sweet.
Note for Confused : Mandrake 9.1 is on the cover DVD of this month's Personal Computer World ... burn three ISO images and play.

if you are running server only then this is perfect, dual CPU's using the smp kdernel for linux helps out alot on the services. Though if its not a server then it may not be worth it. You can get a nice amd 1.4 ghz and it can compile the kernel in 4-7 secs soo not to bad (depends how you configure your kernel)
not only does it take advantage of dual cpus, it tends to do so rather more efficently than windows.
however, if you are running a server, be aware that the true linux server os versions from red hat and mandrake etc, are not free, although they arent what could be described as expensive...
When I finally have time to learn Linux, it will be using the free version that came with the book I bought. I will be putting it on my antique server only because I have nothing better to do with it. It's a Compaq Proliant 1500 with dual P166, 256 meg RAM, and 5 x 4.3 SCSI drives with an array controller. I want to set it up as a firewall eventually.Quote:
