Ok, I have 2 computers running XP, that are connected to a router and a cable modem. Sometimes when I try to get on the internet IE just gives me a page cannot be found error, and also no other programs ( AIM, kazaa, ect.... ) will connect to the internet either. And this can be easily resolved just by rebooting the computer 1 or 2 times ( yes sometime 2 times) Why does XP do this? does anybody else have this problem? the lights on my modem and router are always on and functional also. thanks
Are you using DHCP to get an ip from the router? If so I found that occasionally when the lease renewed it didn't quite sort out the dns side of things - just logging off and logging back in usually solved it. The permanent solution was to set static ips for me. :D
Kazaa and XP are nasty together, run spybot and get ride of the spyware that is in your system and you'll probably see a vast improvement.Quote:

yes i got familiar withthe spyware coming from kazaa, but now the I just did a reformat of my computer and a fresh install of XP I still have this odd problem.Quote:

in XP, go to your network connection, double click on your network card, properties, and you'll see a spot where it shows "tcp/ip" go into it's properties and it will say on the first screen wether it's dhcp or not. that is also where you set a static IPQuote:

ok, I checked and it says that i have DCHP enabled, about the static IP thing, how do I set it and how do I know what to set it as? do I hve to buy a static IP from my ISP? cause I hear about ISPs selling them?

if not and you want to set static IP's, go to start, run and type cmd, then type ipconfig /all in the black window

DHCP was inventited for lan management on large networks, so that admins would not have to run to each station to change ip info whenever a server changed.Quote:

The only difference is that a system configured to DHCP will take slightly longer to boot up, like all of 1-2 seconds. Once the IP information is obtained, there is no difference.
If a computer is set for DHCP and is unable to obtain one during startup (say like no DHCP server) then it will add 30 to 60 seconds on bootup.
I've been running a DHCP server on my home system for several years, and have never had a problem with it.
Again, on large lans, DHCP does create traffic, and needs to be taking into account. On home networks, it really should not matter... unless there is a problem with your DHCP server.

Its a function of windows. A router supplies the info, it is up to windows to use it, so no, a different router would not supply the info any faster.Quote:

If he still wants to use DHCP, maybe increase the lease time. I've seen some home routers that set it to a couple hours by default
