It's been some time since I did any hardware work ..but dob't look on me too badaly please
Caould anyone post a link(s) that step you through basic mboard, cpu and memory trouble shooting. e.g. you have a board (AT or ATX) that powers up when you switch on (and powers down on ATX when you hold the pwr button in) but never gets to the post beep!
I know for many of you this may be boring basic stuff ... so don't be too hard on me!

ok well firstly, i'd be working on the board out of the case. is the CPU and Ram known to be working?
if so, thats a good starting point. also if the board has onboard video, try a seperate PCI / AGP card to aid in the troubleshooting. if you have the make and model of the board, we will also be able to tell you if the board is known for any particular faults.

With the mboard out of the case (I have plastic supports it can sit on) what the best way to switch power on and off. Pinch a switch from an old case?
Also, when a board is in a case an you connect the various FP coonectors (HD LED, etc) the plugs on the wnd of the wires have a small s on the rear side (you have to look hard!) What does this indicate + - ??

ok firstly, the way i test my boards originally was to short the power on with the power on ground on the fp. shorting with the tip of my screwdriver (until I built a little power on box (consisting of 2 switches and 2 leds (power on, reset, hdd led and power led)).
what psu are you using btw? at or atx?

The board is a PC100 M599lmr. Its an ATX board the PSU is 250w.
