Windows XP Pro and Slimtype LSC-24082K

I am at my wits end... I have been having a problem with Windows XP Pro and my WinBookM201 - with and internal Slimtype LSC-24082K DVD/CDRW drive... it reads all CD's and DVD's but it stopped writing to the CD drive after I loaded CD Creator.

I have had Roxio CD Creator loaded (version 5.35) and I have heard that this software may conflict with the XP (Roxio based) CD writing program.

I received the following message on start up..

Issue Description:

A CD-recording driver is installed that might cause stability problems, including problems shutting down and problems using a CD/DVD drive. This driver will be disabled.

I have checked in device manger for the 'offending drivers' and I find:

cdralw2k.sys AND cdr4_2k.sys disabled in the windows/system file...

I have tried two or three quick restores to no avail...
any idea how I fix this? do I have a registry problem(Ugh!) or do I just have to reformat the computer and start over? can the drivers be relpaced or updated? and where do I find them...any help will be much appreciated.

Strangely Roxio (owners of easycd) wrote the native burning program for windows XP - possibly the worst part of XP.

If you wish to keep Easy CD follow this ms article first then go to www.roxio.com and put in your id and get the patches to get the right patches.

Turn off native windows xp burning - right click the cdrw, properties, recording tab and uncheck the recording box and reboot (it doesn't ask for a reboot)

Go here for a new aspi layer and check your aspi is up to scratch.

If you do not wish to keep Easy CD, follow the ms article above and then uninstall it and when/if your cdrw disappears from device manager, follow this

Then go to www.nero.com and get Nero - there is a 30 day trial.

Err umm there is no aspi layer in xp when it ships ... if you don't like how they do it .... you have to ADD your own - but that'll do it :D

'Uncle Bill' (so M$) doesn't strictly support any aspi layers & that's why you get the built in 'crap' which circumvents its need ... I, like Noo, am somewhat amused by all this nonsense, as the worst culprit for messing up the non existant aspi layer is Easy-cd, it promptly adds its own proprietry drivers which would work fine if you already had the 'unrequired' ASPI layer added (this don't make sense even to me & I'm confus-ed ! :D ), But if you haven't added the layer you get what Ernani got ....

Thank you so much for your advice... I followed it removed Roxio's Direct CD 5.35 and all of it's components then edited the registry following the MS instructions you pointed me to... went to my drives properties and disabled recording as I was told to do.I decided not to try Roxio's Direct CD again instead I loaded the program that came OEM with my WinBook Pentium 4 Laptop on disc it's B's Recorder Gold5... now when I try to write to a disc I get and error message that asks me to...

Check the ATAPI connection... cable (there is none the drive is internal) and the master/slave order.

I'm lost again... can you help... I would really appreciate it... Thank You...

Dear Confus-ed...

Thanks for the ASPI info... I had no idea that Roxio and Microsoft were at war... but I guess that explains the non comppatbility with XP...

anyway I followed Noo Noos' advice removed Direct CD and instyalled the OEM software for burning that came with my WinBook pentium 4... (B's Recorer Gold5)... I still can't write to disc and am getting a new error... re: my ATAPI connection ??? Now I'm really lost...
I guess I could restore all the way back to my first day or two of setting up this new computer and then have to reinstall all my programs or I could just reformat the whole thing and start over...

Boy what a mess thank you Microsoft and Roxio for not warning us poor slobs about the ASPI war that they are raging... and PS I agree the Windows XP onboard Roxio burning program really does tsink the joint up...

Anyway... I'm still frustrated...

Just some quick questions then before we decide what's best ... (I'm sure 'we' would like to save you the pain of re-installing).

When you followed Noo's instructions did your nasty startup message 'A CD-recording driver is installed ... This driver will be disabled.' disappear ?

Was/is the device present in device manager afterwards & does it appear to work as a CD ROM (can it read?)

& the new message you are getting is coming from inside the application 'B's Recorer Gold5' (it only appears when you press record in that app)?

Did you try Nero as suggested or just hop straight to this 'other' (I've never heard of it!) application to try burning?

I think something might have gone wrong somewhere in an unistall procedure, there's a really annoying issue with windows (all versions) that means the system installer (commonly refered to as MSI -M$ installer) which many proggies depend on to 'vanish themselves' isn't properly working ...

So is this machine 'all patched up' i.e. has it been to windows update & got all the various (lots!) of patches available ? Otherwise things might not behave as we expect.

I would also as you to look in device manager, (right click my computer, properties, 3rd tab hardware, device manager button) expand the + next to cd roms and see if you have any ! or other mark next to your cdrw. If there is - follow the ms article that I listed for if your drive disappears from my computer.

I believe the winbook M201 is an sis chipset, you may also need to update the chipset drivers from http://download.sis.com/sisdlc/driver_select.jsp - the name of your chipset should be listed under your ide controllers in device manager.

- Yes - all of the nasty messages have gone away on start up and the two offending drivers ‘appear to be gone’ and now replaced by the B’s Gold software drivers…

- Yes - it’s in device manager… and it reads fine…CD/Music & DVD it just refuses to write and tells me it has an ATAPI problem???

- No - the ATAPI message appears whenever I try to write to the drive including the XP writer (UGH! What a crummy application!) and the B’s Gold Software - PS - The B’s Gold was sent to me by WinBook as a OEM gift… and is the CD writing software they (WinBook) will support … (they say NERO could invalidate my warranty???)

Did you try Nero as suggested or just hop straight to this 'other' (I've never heard of it!) application to try burning?

-Yes - but when I edited the registry I did a pretty thorough search for all Roxio ‘ghosts and goblins’ and I think I got them all… I’m mystified by the ATAPI error message as it seems to have nothing to do with the previous problem…

- Yes - although I have used system restore two or three times and I may have lost some of the security patches… (the Explorer security patches mess with my Home Wireless 802.11 (not HEP enabled)… so I have not downloaded those…

Thanks again!… The device manager seems fine and the B’s Gold device drivers are now in place and seem to be ok… I’m mystified by the ATAPI error message (only when I try to write!) the drive reads CD’s/Music and DVD’s fine…

I will do more research as you suggested at the Recorder Gold site and the WinBook site and see if I get anywhere this weekend…

I’ll get back to you…

Ahh so its a windows message then !?! I dunno how you are gonna answer that for me ... I 'know' what windows messages look like by the style of the box or whatever presents them, so we'll assume it is for now - I can't see it being anything else if it also happens inside that Roxio 'pooh' ...

So reading the support 'stuff' for b's recorder 5 ... I find a couple of bits which spring out as perhaps important ... 1. it talks about having trouble with certain chipsets - 2. It also appears not to like Norton 'anything' !!!

So if you have norton 'anti anything' installed (I personally have a great dislike of all s/w that is 'Norton' ..but we'll leave that aside for now) temporarily disable it, & try again, but as we are pursuing the theory that its a windoze message, this probably won't help...

Next suggestion track down any chipset patches & improved IDE drivers for your mobo ... Look here - I found them for you ;) - you are particularly 'interested' (you probably aren't at all interested, but its what I think might crack this :)) in the one labelled "Windows XP chipset driver for the WinBook M Series" .

Chipset drivers are the 'stuff' which identifies the 'inards' of your computer to windows, if that ain't 'just so' then windows has every likelyhood of 'misbehaving'...

So looking back over the thread ... seems again Noo & I share the same opinion ... as she gives you a link to SIS (they are a company who make part of the inards of your computer) ... the one I give is from the manufacturer, (btw your chipset is called M650). You want both the chipset driver and any improved IDE driver ...

Final thought ... I can't think how installing 'Nero' could/can invalidate any warranty ! ... I think more likely they don't want a load of support questions about that ! but I have no real idea why they'd say that ;) (I personally would have tried it straight away - nero kicks out much better 'error messages' when stuffs not quite right, saving much, much hassle, as you know what to 'fix').

All of my drivers where up to date in both Primary and Secondary IDE… The SIS Chipset was also up to date…

There are no device driver conflicts and the drivers loaded for the CDRW (which by the way is a Slimtype LSC - 24082K)

The drivers that are the first two listed on the drive seem correct as B.H.A. (from the B5 Gold Program) they are…

C:\Windows\System32\drivers\BsStor.sys
C:\Windows\System32\drivers\cdrom.sys
(this is followed by the normal XP system drivers

This all has no conflicts and says that it’s all working properly…

I’m still getting the following … and I believe it is a Windows error…
Wheneve I try to write to the drive…

An ATAPI error occurred.
Disc error.
< Error No : aa037302 >

One more clue? … BHA (B5 Gold) told me to uncheck the record box on the CDRW drive… (although it doesn’t work checked or unchecked)

If not I guess I will be spending a REFORMATTING and RECOVERING weekend…

FRankly I would be hacking the reg to bits - long, slow and frustrating way to learn what hooks where, its quicker to format an install.
