Stupid money!

So I have a little client on the side who has just stupid amounts of money.
They had a Power Mac for their kids (dual G4 less than a year old). Thay called me Wednesday to say they were having problems with it and could I come over and take a look at it? I say sure, get to the hous and turn it on and hear the tell tale sound of a grinding HD. I say no problem its a HD going bad and could replace it for a few hundred including parts and labor. here it comes...wait for it.

"No if the HD is bad why don't we just get rid of it and get that new G5 thing the boys are talking about?"

Long story short I got a newish mac in my office, and sold/setup a new G5 for the family.

Not bad!!! But don't it make you sick when people have $$ to burn like that!

I just fell out of my chair...Damn why can't I be that lucky, or that rich!

I was expecting them to balk at the repair costs. seems like that it always how it is for me and rich people. they buy a $2000 system but don't want to pay me the $40/hr to diagnose their problems.

but anyway, you've got yourself a nice rig from the deal. I'm not much of a Mac guy myself. I'd probably sell it on ebay minus the hard drive.

Same here....

These folk are the only mac clients I have and not much of a mac guy myself. I had a whole new experience in stupidity last night trying to install OS X on a new HD. Apperently initialize in the Mac world is format in everybody elses world. Took me 2 hours to figure that one out :(

Because its the "initial" setup of the disk

Back in my misspent youth I used a CPM-80 machine and had to PIP disks. Initialize, format, PIP, whatever. Six to one, half a dozen to the other.

I only had to do it a couple times and I don't recall the address or syntax but in the early days of DOS you could use DEBUG to fire off a low level format routine.

If I had my own business I might have kept the machine around too. Good opportunity to expand your areas of knowledge and perhaps expand your customer base in the long run.

Top Tip:

As soon as mac G6's come out, (or whatever the next one is), get round there and tell them that it's madness not to get one. Surely "the boys" will have been talking about them ;)
