Organ Donation compulsory or Voluntary ?

OK as we seem to have a healthy debate going both on religion and Euthanasia I thought perhaps this deserved a separate thread to be open to a fair debate.

Question : Should organ donation be made compulsory for all [both adults and children regardless of religion,creed or colour,etc,etc] rather than being voluntary?

There was a news clip last night on one of the UK channels noting a single nurses hard work had increased organ donations at her hospital by over 700% and that the doners kin were in actual fact happy to see another benefit from the sad circumstances.Now given our everlasting desire these days to live a loooong life should it be made compulsory?

My personal view is once your dead its just a body and no longer the person that lived before and yes they should do as they wish with the parts of the body as benefits society as a whole.

Hell no, I am going to be properly mummified with my vital organs placed in sacred jars, and if any of the said jars is violated I will return from the dead to destroy not only the violators but also their families, and friends of the families along with their families.

I agree that organ donations are a great thing. When my sister died, my parents had her organs harvested (she was almost 2 and not able to make the choice.) Her organs were able to save 3 people, and it is something that still makes me smile. I know she did not need them, and the familys of the people saved were better off for the gift she gave. Since that day, everyone in my family is set up to be an organ donor. I do not know of any reasons not to, but i do not know all religons. If it were made to be mandatory, I think there should be a way for people to opt out, but they would have to give a reason why. Here in the states, the liberals would go nuts if you made anything mandatory without having a loophole.

I dont think liberals would be the one to go nuts over that, or did you mean libertarians (usually the party most concerned with personal freedoms)?


Sounds like a good idea to me. Something irks me a bit about it being mandatory though. Perhaps automatic unless you opt out (which is easy as checking a box on a drivers license or calling a phone # or going to a web site)?

Automatic unless you opt out sounds good to me too. Mandatory is ludacris.

You all can have my :butt: , but nothing else. High mileage usage, exit only of course, plenty of hot sauce and peppers passed through...

Forums have been shifted about a bit, not all links are up todate ... but its getting there.

I would go for the opt out, I am aware of a number of cultures that require the body to be whole when buried so as long as it doesn't go against the beliefs of the Donor - however the family might have something to say and that's where it gets messy.

Mostly the problem is that people don't even think about it, a bit like giving blood, there are those who conscienciously go every week and there are many more who just expect to use the service without having to donate.....kinda like attitudes to shareware really :D

Regardless, it's my personal opinion that government should keep its collective nose of this. If the present program is already showing signs of improvement, then why regulate it to death?

I think it's once every 6 weeks or 2 months that they allow you to come back...

Some countries are like this, I believe australia is one such country (correct me if i'm wrong). Only a small percentage of people make the concious choice on the subject one way or the other and that needs to be respected. However if the person does not care, that's entirly different.

Probably the best would be to make a mandatory option at a certain age or when getting the driver license, choose either yes or no, and leave the possibility to change at any time. Same for disconnection from life-support devices after a certain period of time, then there will be no more arguments like "he/she would have liked that" (see the Florida case). In CT there is a checkbox for organ donations on the driver's license, but I wonder how many of the ones who want to donate have actually checked it...

F- all of ya’ll and your mandatory crap. You want greater participation, better education is the best thing you can do. Public service advertisements illustrating how victims were able to save another’s life, and sensationalize that!!! Then, remind people that they can opt for it, and tell them how. Like someone just said, it is an option when you get your license, but when I was 16, I didn’t care about anything like that. Since then I have renewed several times, and I always forget. I used to give blood all of the time, but that was because my previous employers always arranged to have a bus show up a few times a year, and allowed us to donate on the clock. A little incentive goes a long way!!!

The minute you make something mandatory, all of the people that might have wanted to do it for their own well being, now are the first ones to scream out about their rights being infringed!!!
