What does sfc /scannnow do toy your system?

Can someone please explain what the sfc /scannow command actually does to your system and will it effect any currently installed programs etc?

that command scans the system for files that have been modified and if found, will restore original files from the windows CD or dll cache.

Will this effect other programs that have put there own dll files into the system folder, or even different versions of the same Windows dll files?

it will only affect programs that have replaced system DLL's, not programs that have added them
