Acquired this in a "horse trade" I was planning to install Win XP on it This a PIII 500 machine. I see on HP drivers a keyboard driver, a net card driver and thats about all. Will XP pickup the onboard sound, the video driver and USB?, or am I out of luck and stuck with Win 98SE on this one?

if you pull off the lid / side and let us know what kind of board it is (wheather its onboard video or agp/pci video) and a board model, someone will be able to help you out :)

I actually have one of these puppies, although not the pizza box version. The VLi8 uses an intel bx chipset, so XP should identify it fine. Mine is running W2K, so XP might identify some things that W2K does not. These were orignially sold w/ NT or 98, so HP never provided much in the way of updated drivers for XP or W2K. It has integrated Cirrus CS4280 sound. If XP doesn't identify it, try this W2K driver (didn't see an XP driver on the Cirrus web site) http://www.cirrus.com/en/software/dr...dio/PW3041.zip

And IMO they missed the boat not taking advantage of that market.

Look at what ATI has become after all those years of bad driver releases.
They offerred integrated chips to MB makers and here they are now, one of the the Big Two.

Just in case you're having probs with the HP Vectra VLi8 bios and you can not access your operating system at all do this: get this bios file:

Crisis recovery flash process.
To be used if your bios is corrupted and you can't boot normally
a. Format a floppy disk under DOS and make it bootable.
b. Copy the required platform.bin, phlash.exe and BIOS image ("hz0110us.FUL").
Add the following line in AUTOEXEC.BAT file:
PHLASH hz0110us.ful /c /pf=b /V /mode=3
that's foreward slash V above by the way
c. Insert the floppy disk, set switch 2 (BIOS CRISIS RECOVERY), power-on the system.
d. Several beeps can be heard during 1-2 minutes.
The long beep at the end means that Bios flashing is finished.
e. Press power button during 5secs to power off the system.
f. Reset switch 2, remove the crisis floppy, and power-on your system again.
Here are switches to use with phlash.exe
/H displays the help screen with all parameters available
/B Binary file to be loaded as platform.bin
/V Compare BIOS image file and flash EEPROM after
flashing
/C BIOS will automatically load CMOS default at
following boot
/P Production mode: no screen ouptuts, no beeps,
auto reboot
/S Silent: no beeps
/EXIT Exit to DOS instead of rebooting
/pf=b Standard flash process. The Bootblock is flashed.
/MODE=3 Updates DMI strings.
Ex: phlash.exe /B=platform.bin /C /V /pf=b

I have one running under XP Pro. All drivers are installed by XP. No problem. My wife is happy with it. I did, however, replace the 6 gig hard drive with a Western Digital 20 gig which was a discard from a previously done upgrade. I also put in a 256 meg pc100 memory stick to replace the 64 meg provided. I would suggest that it will run a lot better with those changes.

Got one just few days ago . Installed WinXP Prof., it detected everything by itself . Intel 440BX chipset , Crystal SoundFusion 16bit Integrated Audio , 3C905B-TX 10/100 Mbps Integrated Network Adapter, Intel Celecron MMX 500 MHz (SL3FY) Processor (FSB 66MHz)(Socket/PGA 370)(http://processorfinder.intel.com/scr...sp?sSpec=SL3FY) , Motherboard KZM-6121 Rev 1.3 , Phoenix Tech Ltd HZ 01.05US, 10/8/1999 Bios , HP Vectra VLi8 SF (D9456T) , 256 MB (16 Chip, CL3, MT) PC133 + 128 MB (8 Chip, LD) PC133 = 384 MB SDRAM .
Obtained info that it can take max 512 MB SDRAM . But don't know what max speed processor it can take with what FSB ?
Also noticed that Secodary IDE Connector is a 50 pin laptop type female connector, anyone knows where to get converter interface to convert to a regular 40 pin ide ?

Your issue as far as processor support is not the bus speed, but the bios and voltage. You will need to flash the bios to the latest version, but even then the fastest processor supported I believe is 600MHz or 800MHz

On Internet someone selling it with 600 MHz processor , also . 600 MHz Celerons are either 1.5 or 1.7 volt . 600 MHz PIIIs are either 1.6 or 1.75 volt , mine one (Celeron 500 MHz) is 2.0 volt . So most likely mobo supports these voltages . But not sure . Will check your links now . Many many thanks .
I've got the VLi8 minitower, which is slot 1, not socket 370. It uses a FIC KZM-6120 mobo. I know it will take a p3 up to 750 or 800. Don't know if the SF uses the same board or a different one - any identifying markings? The bigger issue however, is bios support. I think you will probably get more bang for the buck with a P3.
