Posted this over in the printer/plotter section and got no feedback, and I'm getting close to the 11th hour here, so I figured I'd give it a stab in the Lounge as well.
I need some suggestions for a decent, low volume laser printer. Only major requirement is that it must be able to do condensed printing DOS mode, and handle legal paper.
Don't know if HP takes care of everything you want, but we have all their lasers from HP4 to the HP4200, I really like all of their products.
True. The cost of the supplies is quite high though and some of them have chips that tell the printer when it's time for a new one, regardless of that fact that they could still work for a loooong time. Hey, HP needs a constant source of income after all...Quote:

Seriously though, if you're worried about that chip that stops your printer every time you a refilled cartridge in, don't. This is a chip resetter and its free:

You just click reset when it gets about empty, refill it, and you're good to go.
I like HP & lexmark for the most part, but their low-end lasers seem to have lots of problems (ie. multiple paper feed, bad fusers & pressure rollers, etc.) & parts are very expensive. My shop has started selling the Okidata B4200 to lots of our customers now. We've sold over 50 of them in the last six months, and honestly I haven't heard a single complaint yet. They're not that expensive either. Just a suggestion.
Regardless what brand you go with, though, I would make sure that the paper is not fed through the top. This seems to be the cause of most of the multiple feed problems. Good luck.

My vote is with HP. Check out their 2300 series. Lot's of upgradability (well ok not lots but lots for a small workgroup)

HP. We have 5si MX models that are great and it looks like e-bay has them super cheap (legal goes into a tray on the side). We have some 4 plus printers as well and they can have legal paper placed in a tray. Cheap on e-bay as well.
Stay away from the 1000 series of HP printers, nothing but issues with the stuff we bought. It's for low volume laser printing but they jam constantly. We had issues with 1100 and 1200 series - worst things ever.
Yeah, that toner low/toner out warning is way to sensitive, but I have all my users trained to shake the toner cartridge and not to tell me until it is out and screwing stuff up. The HP4100 is real bad about toner usage, but the 4200's we have have been great, even without the extended toner. Of course, they did discontinue the 4100's very quickly. Nothing like the work horse of the old HP4's though.
Assuming that the 2300 has replaced the 2200, I would go with that also. I share one with two other people. According to the self test, its only jammed 10 times out of 17,800 pages printed.
I like my little Samsung ML-4500. Not sure about DOS compatibility though.
Benefit of a Laserjet is they tend to work well with drivers for the older ones.
