My board has a top bus speed of 133 and a top multiplier of 5.5. Currently I have a 600Mhz 512k cache P3 on the BX board. Would the top speed of processor be 733 or is there any alternative? The multiplier is not set manually but the bus spedd can be.
Which make and model of board?
If the maximum settings are those stated unless there is a bios update available that supports setting larger processors then thats your lot.
A bios cannot make the top multiplier any higher because it is limited by the board. Isn't there any magical upgrades like this K62 and K63? They have an effective multiplier of 6 when given 2. If I used a socket converter would there be any of these magical upgrades useable?
Not nessecarily so a bios upgrade could reallocate the multiplier settings taking it above the present 5.5 option to support newer processors.Quote:

The K6 tops out at a 550mhz cpu and is for socket seven boards. And these boards usually only have a fsb speed of 100mhz. Some say 112fsb or a little more but usually are unstable. And yes the 2 multiplier becomes a 6 in most of these boards. But you have to have a board where you can set the voltage to 2.1 and up. But the end of the matter is sometimes with certain boards and excellent cooling you can get a 500mhz to run at 600mhz.
But you already have a board that runs faster and I believe the multiplier trick only works with K6's.
I suggest if you want faster then upgrade to a new board and cpu.
Overclocking is not something you want to do unless you can afford the lose.

I have not tried it, but powerleap markets an upgrade kit http://www.powerleap.com/PL-iP3T.html that will get you a 1400 p3 w/ your 133 fsb. It handles the cooling and the voltage conversion (assuming your mb can't) - the key is whether your bios supports the processor. So, as previously asked, what make and model board? You should also be aware that p3 cpu's are multiplier locked. The board settings have no effect.
