This is gonna be easy, must be friday cos my melon is a bit slow today.
Trying to network two comps with an X-over cable.
2000 can ping XP but not the other way round. XP sees itself in the workgroup folder but 2000 always gives the "workgroup not available" error
Setup IPs 192.168.100.1 and 2, same workgroup. LAN cards both work and are lit up, cable has been tested. File and printer sharing enabled on both.
Theres something obvious I've overlooked but cant put my finger on it today :eek2:
Ok, how about XP's "built-in" firewall? Is it configed to permit the type of traffic that you need. Also check drivers, and the event viewer for browser election info.Quote:

Enable the guest accounts on both machines and be sure the xp firewall is turned off
XP firewall was off, guest accounts enabled still no go.
I think its a problem on the 2K box as i cant even browse the workgroup whereas XP can and it will see itself.
"the list of servers for this wrokgroup is not currently available"
I may have inadvertently turned some of the services off but have checked all the obvious ones and re-enabled them.
doh ....
i knew i was having a bad day yesterday, it was Kerio Firewall on the 2K box ... disabled now they're talking to each other. Just need to workout how to re-configure Kerio now.
Another quick question: If I share the internet connection will the one Firewall protect both comps or do I need one on each.
You need the firewall on both boxes - unless you want to take the risk that NAT will protect you.
It's to easy for stuff to connect once its installed to then get out and go about its business.... if you have a firewall like kerio (xp wont do this well enough) you can set it to ask each time something (new) wants to get on the net.
noo, having a few problems configuring Kerio, the LAN only works when kerio is disabled. I've gone into Admin > Advanced > Microsoft Networking and setup the IP of the other machine as a trusted source but it still wont connect. Any ideas?

it netbios is not there, click add/protocol. It will show you that said protocol. finally install it.
if it not solve your problem. click mycomputer and open it. right click c:/ then properties. verify if the file system is both NTFS for two Operating system(OS). if one is NTFS and the other is FAT 32 you need to convert the FAT 32 to NTFS.
You can convert it by just click start/run, type cmd or command then enter. your now in the dos promp. on your dos promp type convert c: /fs:ntfs then hit enter. just continue it. computer will ask you to restart once it finished to convert it.

noo, think i'll PM adept as you suggested.
Ipx/spx should only ever be installed if you have software that cannot use TCP/IP such as novell server or some lan games.
Thats what I thought also, I've stuck with TCP/IP. We use IPX/SPX for our Novell clients at work.
