Sony PCG-F707 ~ WindowsXp

Hi All.

I have the above laptop that came with Windows 98 pre-installed.
Is it possible to upgrade it to Windows Xp Professional and still maintain its default functions, ie: electronic volume control, etc?

Would l need additional drivers?

I hope somebody knows the answer to this.

Check here and do the XP readiness test that may reveal some things

The tool to do it is on the xp cd itself too, as well as 'somewhere' on the M$ site I was too lazy to google ... note the tool is capable of connection to the internet with a connection present & updating itself for any changes they might have made(its worth getting the updated stuff)

Certain kit 'combinations' work fine in 98 but not xp .. its to do with ACPI & how sharing of resources is done 'different' between the two ..

If you can just make an image of your 98 install as it 'before & good' & then if it all goes horribly wrong you can restore to wher you pressumably are now ;)

You want if you can to do a clean install, not upgrade despite the fact you have to re-install all your apps, it works out better in the long run as the conversion process isn't foolproof :)

I can't even find the 707 as an F series model on the Sony website.

I did find a PCG-707 model that originally came with Win95, so thatS' not looking too good for an upgrade to WinXP.

Have you thought about Win2000 instead?

If you can run Win98, Win2000 shouldn't be too much of a stretch.

This model came with Win 98SE, have you tried the Sony Vaio web site?

So other than not knowing what 'Bonzai Buddy' is {its full of spyware ! that's what it is - so if it pops up don't be pressing yes - its malware !}, the question seems answered ... so I'll just waffle for a bit about the quote above .. ;)

Err umm its all to do with acpi & allocation of resources & what can or can't share with what ..

Any 9x system uses the MS specification table as a 'supplementary' method of doing this arbitration, that's a table 9x uses (maintained by windows itself) in addition to the DMI pool maintained by bios routines .. any NT based system has never heard of the MS specification table & either directly accesses hardware like w2k & xp or like NT does, bios ...

So even though the hardware requirements in terms of memory & cpu etc aren't so much different you can't say for sure it'll 'go' without either trying it or running a tool like this ..;)

Hi there,

I'm looking at this on a PCG F707 running XP Pro.

I am looking for a driver for the mouse pad! That's how I stumbled upon this...

You won't be able to have all that custom vaio software.

Avoid windows 2000! I spent hours and hours searching for a driver for the flat screen, one does not exist. So it has to be XP, where the screen is supported, unless you want 8 bit graphics...

Everything works absolutely fine under XP

So welcome graeme to windrivers :thumbs: & I'll add little do you know if you believe that ! ;) .. but yes driver support in xp is much 'broader' than in w2k, so for home systems & users, the jump from 98 to xp is generally much less painful than from 98 to w2k in the 'find me my god damned drivers' stakes ! :)

W2k is a good solid product, but for supported envirnoments really, where you have loads of blokes like me who realise its limitations & know what hardware is 'good' to run with it ..

Now did you have a question in there somewhere or was it more a condemnation of what you perceive as a bad product ?
