Hi,
I have the above printer using the Windows Xp driver.
The problem I have is that, double sided printing doesn't seem to be an option available anymore.
I have used the printer with 98 and Me and have had the option available.
Have tried to install NT driver, without success.
Have checked HP website and got up to date driver.
Does anybody know of a workaround or where I could download a driver.

Welcome to windrivers Wellington. As you have discovered, the native microsoft print drivers blow bilge water. If the manufacturer does not develop its own xp driver (and apparently hp has not), you are stuck. Microsoft was just concerned with providing basic functionality - not all the options are supported. I was in the same boat w/ my NEC SS860 when I upgraded to W2K - went from 600 dpi to 300, lost n-up printing and watermarks, etc.

I've got one of them ... well I never ! so I could have been printing on both sides with it then under 98 could I ?
I ain't that confus-ed ! It doesn't have a duplex unit & I'm pretty sure you couldn't fit one, all I ever did was print the odd pages out first, then put the paper back in & print the even pages (still do !) ... so 98 could have told me to do that could it ? - ah well .. I for one won't be moaning that they 'took away' a feature that wasn't really there in the first place ;)

But playing around I have found that if for example you want to print from a Microsoft Word document, using File then Print, you can then enter the odd or even pages manually.
Ie: To print odd pages, you enter in the Page Range section 1,3,5,7 not forgetting the comma, then for the even pages 2,4,6,8
Hopefully, after a bit of practice you can acheive double sided printing, with Page 2 following Page 1 etc.

I had the 722C, but at that time didnt yet have the automatic double sided printing module, but the quality went from barely acceptable (HPs had by far the worst quality back then, now they have by far the best with their new 7960) to horrible when I upgraded to win2k/xp.
I bought a new one just to get the acceptable quality back, and it came with the automatic double sided printing module, which I carried on to both new printers I got since then.
I still agree HP should have kept supporting those older printers in 2k/xp, at least it made me a good excuse to upgrade :D
I've lost the double sided printing option on my DeskJet 890C due to changing from Win95 to WinXP. Manually entering all odd pages with commas doesn't seem to be an option. Has anyone tried putting the old hdd from their old computer as a 2nd drive inthe new one and arranging to boot from either Win95 or WinXP. I am going to do this to solve the printing problem and because I have encountered other new prblems with XP.
Why not get a Deskjet 5550? They can be gotten for very cheap on ebay, or less than $100 if stores still carry it, else get any new HP thats around $100, they now have photo lab quality prints and are a lot faster (and like almost all HP inkjets they support automatic double sided printing, your duplexer will fit even if HP says its not compatible).
If you dont need photo quality and print a lot get the business inkjet 1100, its $199, extremely fast in black (23ppm) and color (20ppm), comes with duplexer standard, and supports multiple paper trays, although the quality isnt photo lab quality.
As soon as I saw the terrible print quality my 722 did with the XP drivers (and considering it was also pretty poor to start with), I immediately bought a new one, and got 3 more since, all HPs of course.
Enlightening - though a bummer. Had hoped someone smarter than me knew how to restore double sided printing function with hp-710c and Xp. Seems I have to choose between retaining what has been a reliable workhorse of a printer, but using 2x as much paper as necessary, or making a new purchase.
Since I do lots of printing for work and for school, simply having less bulky documents to store is rather a priority for me!
Any advice on what would be a good replacement :eek2: ? Am interested in
reasonable (ok cheap!) purchase price
low cost per page
color capability
speed
Photo quality - would be nice but not a huge priority
Am not wedded to HP, have been considering Canon.

Err I'm still as confus-ed as before on just whats so hard about putting in all the even numbers, seperated by commas, then do all the odd pages ..
Works just fine over here with the native windows xp driver.
If you dont need photo quality, I got an HP business inkjet 1100 (1200 is now out with even faster print speeds). The cartridges hold a TON of ink, I used to make 30 pages per cartridge set on my HP photo quality printer, I now must make 200 per cartridge set.
It is also very fast, 20 pages per minute in color, 23 in black, and comes standard with double sided printing.
I also still have an HP photo quality printer all in one (PSC 2410), they also have the same printer in stand-alone, ask if you want me to find the model number.
BUT, as I mentioned this printer will cost $2-4 US of ink per page (8x10 @ 100% coverage), so if you're printing pages with a lot of coverage like I am, DO NOT BUY THIS, unless you are willing to refill the cartridges every 30 pages, which is what I used to do until it became a ridiculous waste of time, so I got a business model that holds 5-6 times more ink.
So, if you want photo quality, and dont mind spending a fortune in ink OR a fortune in time by refilling (doing so brings ink cost to nothing, but it will take a lot of your time), get an HP that uses the 56/57/58 cartridges (only the ones that take the 58 cartridge are true photo-lab quality, the business inkjet claims to be photo quality, but the quality is almost as bad as the deskjet 710, but still VERY good for non-photo documents such as the DVD label of a software I sell).
If you dont need photo quality get the business inkjet 1100/1200, it's fast, comes with double sided printing standard, and prints a TON per set of ink cartridge. The cartridges for the 1100/1200 are also very easy to refill, I do refill them, but I also noticed they seem to be fairly cheap on ebay.
If you have any questions feel free to ask, I've done a LOT of research to decide on the Business inkjet 1100, I also considered color laser printers, until I realized they cost 4-5 times as much, then cost 5 times more in toner, are a LOT slower (4 pages per minute in color vs. 20-24 on an inkjet), and MUCH lower resolution, 600dpi VS 4800, as well as don't support double sided printing until the $3000 models.
I ordered print samples from HP and the color laser quality is absolutely terrible until you get in the $2000+ models, at which point it is still inferior to inkjet, and even the $10 000 ones can't beat a $100 photo quality inkjet for quality.

but depending what you are printing from (ie web, Blackboard) the print dialogue box might not give that option and/or you can't get a print preview to know how many pg. there are. And if you have lots of printing to do, it is too easy to make a typo.
