Link? I have never (personally) heard of a gigapro. What kind of laptop? who makes it?
Gigapro is a trade name for VIA CPUs ;) ... yeah a link to the 'desired beast' would indeedy be handy ... :)
I found it thru pricewatch, the company selling them is: http://accupc.com/itemDetail.jsp?pid=nbsta531d14wQuote:

You can do better for that money ($700) IMHO by a considerable way , keep on googling .. & with a 'real' cpu in it too - VIA cpu = cyrix = 'even worse than a celeron' ..
Syntax Group are I think ECS who also are PC chips who are 'pants' but cheap - I hate all this 're-branding' cobblers !
I found this on the Amptron website which sells a mobo/cpu combo with what they call the Gigapro cpu. It appears to be the desktop version of what you are talking about.
The 1 Giga Pro processor used on this motherboard is based on the Via Samuel 2 technology. Via acquired the Cyrix processor (which was the IBM Cyrix a few years back) and has been refining it to be a market leader where low power consumption and low cost are the key goals. Performance is comparable to the Celeron 667 or better, only with less power consumption and less heat. This allows smaller, quieter, highly reliable yet less expensive systems to be built. A machine built with this motherboard, with the 1 GigaPro CPU soldered in and a small CPU cooler pre-installed, will perform at least on par with a Celeron 667 system. With the reduced power and heat, characteristic of this processor, smaller power supplies, fans and cases can be used. With the CPU soldered in, there will be one less socket on the motherboard, which increases reliability and reduces cost. This solution makes a lot of sense for inexpensive home computers, low cost networked data entry workstations, point of sales applications, internet appliances, any application where low cost and low power are more important than extreme data processing capability
Ahh yes it's a Transmeta (like stated: VIA). If all's you want is a system to surf the net, do emails and type up letters then that's a decent machine BUT I, IMHO, would NEVER buy something called a valuebook. Another thing to keep in mind is that it doesn't come with an OS (that I can see) and it only comes with "256K memory" I think they ment to say MB and even if they did it's not that much really. Just my 0.03Quote:

If you guys know where I could get a notebook in that price range pls let me know. thanx again
so your looking for a notebook in the 800+- range? BB, CC and yes even CompUSA have deals that will give you a system for about that after rebate. And even though it pains me to say it a Compaq/HP or even a *knock on wood* e-machine will be better than a no name system. At least there is some type of support for said machines. I think I'm up to about 0.07 now?
btw don't be confused by the duron 850mhz 1200+ rating. Durons are NOT performanc rated by AMD and that number may be a complete fiction. Also be aware that the duron might be a desktop version which will not have the power savings features of mobile processors. I would definitely think about a lappy from a major manufacturer with either an Intel or AMD laptop type processor. And of course if count in the fact you will get an operationg system (XP) you will get a better deal buying the 799.00 specials that are out there.(in fact Dell has one for 699.00 after a 100 rebate.Quote:

A link to that would have been good ;) & that sounds a much better spec for the money than we started with .. much, its Dell though :D, but really for laptops they ain't half bad .. are they doing that 3 years free warranty stuff over there still, or at all ?Quote:
