i am a beginner at networking.
I bought a broadband router to route my 1mb connection to two computers but when they are connected the internet on both of them runs at like slower then 56k.
I did nothing to any settings whn connecting them i just pluged them in. Are there any settings i am ment to adjust to fix this?
Or how could i fix it so both computers run at 500k each as i am on a 1mb connection?

So your broadband comes into the router, and you have both pcs connected to that router? Or do you have a different configuration?
How have you measured the slowness?
Have you done some proper tests? here is a speed test that is not affiliated to any one provider
What is the model number of the modem, the router and what type of broadband is it?

just opening web pages and stuff goes incrediably slow!!
and its adsl?, cable?, isp is? speed test results are?

What kind of router are you using??
How are the PC's plugged into it?
What OS on the PC's?
Are they getting IP's from the router through DHCP or are they hard coded?
Shot in the dark: Are you using any file sharing programs and alowing others to upload from you? If so this can just kill your connection as the upload speeds are often capped at a fraction of the download speed.
I am not familar with this hardcoded thing u speak of i am only a beginner i have a motorola sb4100 surfboad modem. It is 1mb cable connection supplied by telewest blueyonder and my router is a "Mentor ADSL/CABLE Broadband Router.
ok did you set up the router when you got it? Usually you open it by going to http://192.168.0.1 in internet explorer.
If there is an option for the router to do dhcp, check it. Apply and restart the router using the buttons on the web page.
Restart both computers.
Now about the last question ILTU asked, do you have filesharing?
no i didnt do that with the router and yeh i wanna file share between computers but i dont know how to
I believe he was refering to pier 2 pier sharing, like kazaa, morpheous, bear share, imesh etc... if that's running on 1 of the two systems, you can kiss most of your speed good bye.Quote:

I have read the manual it has not helped at all.

OK, what did the manual say about setting up the router?
if you have MR4A/UK (check on the bottom of it) then this is the manual for it.
hi i contacted the people who sold me the router and they have quided me through it
both computers now have the internet.
I now need to know how to share files.
I have taken a file and placed it in shared documents but when i open shared documents on the other pc the file is not in there.
ok are these both XP pc's?
Need to know what operating system is on each of the computers 98, 2000, XP, ME?).
What did you do to fix the issue with internet?
