Xp Per-user display settings

Hi there folks , just wanted to know if any of you found the solution for tgis situation :
On a multi-user Xp Pro sp1 box, the display settings are global, that is if Admin OR user 2 changes display settings, they change on both sides.

i've come across a Microsoft document confirming that this is a feature, not a bug hehe (they wrote : This feature is by design) so they don't intend on changing it.

I've found two utilities wich do the job :
1-Xp user display_setup.exe : Silently and correctly does the job, but icon locations are messed up due to the display switch when returning from lower resolutions.

2-XP_UserDisplay.exe : Works by asking once the resoultion then remebers it. Messes up icon locations and also messes up quick launch icons (changing them)

So here i am, can anyone help me ?

Icon locations would mess up if you are changing screen resolution. Not sure what you are asking - you want us to find you a better utility that knows where to put the icons each time?

How about analysing the necessity for constant resolution changes between users and seeing if there is some common ground?

The shuffling of desktop icons is one of the reasons I hate going into safe-mode. The only real solution is to limit or eliminate the number of desktop icons.

Icon locations only mess up because Xp isn't intended to use user-set resolutions. 98 works fine, 2k works fine
(of course i COULD reformat to win2k, but that wouldn't be working on the issue)

What i'm asking is : Has anybody found a way to use per-user display settings in Windows XP Pro sp1.
As you can see i already did some research on my problem, i wouldn't have come to you without debugging first.
I am not asking for support, i am not asking you to find any other utility neither do i request research on your side (not personnal, anyone who may help) and i certainly don't -expect- anything from you guys ;^) I only wanted to know if anybody found a way to make this work.

The computer i'm setting up is for two users. I don't have another computer for them nor can i use a single-user set-up. What you are calling "necessity for constant resolution changes" is in fact personnal taste. I would never let anyone choose my desktop resolution, and i'm pretty convinced that you wouldn't either. In my case, one user is an experienced PC user and the other is an old newbie (can't see the screen that well) so the same resolution for both of them doesn't quite fill the need.

Of course if i ever don't find a complete solution one of them will have to customize his icons at every login, but wouldn't it be useful if it all worked out ?

I was seeking clarification of the problem. I could see you had done some research. I was offering another approach based on no information about why the resolution had to be changed.

Have you thought about hardware profiles?

I understand your point... I haven't experienced hardware profiles on desktops yet (only docked/undocked laptops) but it's a good tip non the less... i'll look out to try it (if i'm not mistaken, you choose the profile on boot ?)

I have the same problem. My daughter uses resolutions so small I can't see them. So we both have to change the resolution as soon as we sign on.

It would be nice if XP would let you set different resolutions for different users.

I have found a little utility that lets you change the resolution. The utility is qres.zip. I have to put the shortcut for the utility in the startup so it will run when I log on. Then the resolution stays the same so my daughter has the same program in startup that changes the resolution to her likeing.

It's a workaround, but it works for me. I create a shortcut with the arguments to change whatever resolution I want, example /x:640 for 640X480
I put the shortcut in startup and it works fine. I tried making a batch file but it didn't work for me so I just make a shortcut in startup.

just to deviate the topic slightly, are registries also per user or global, or is part of the reg dedicated to each user such as certain settings e.g. HKEY_USERS

i want to load nav on one user but disable it on the other, does nav differentiate users or does it have a global settings system?
