Please help
I am trying to connect my Sony Camcorder DCR PC105E to my PC running XP Pro, to be able to create DVD's via Fire Wire Cable.
I have read and tried eveything that was advised to Clark Kent but nothing worked not even the Formatting of my PC....
I have a VIA OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller installed and working but as soon as i connect the Camcorder and run the install program i get error Sony DV-VCR "The Data is Invalid".

Failing that then... The data is invalid is a known problem. This involves editing the registry while logged in as administrator.

Try each fix listed - yours being a sony camcorder may benefit from the panasonic patch...
The person in the thread did end up installing xp over the top... we never did find the root cause of the problem. Hope this helps.
This is an under documented issue with several PCI cards, including the Texas Instruments IEEE 1394 controller card which was shipped with MovieDV Suite.
It is due to a protection problem in the Windows registry. At the end of the install, the device driver displays "The Data is invalid". To fix this problem, go to Start, Run... and type "REGEDT32.EXE" without the quotes to run the Registry Editor.
Navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\ENUM\P CI and you will see a number of keys of the form "VEN_xxxx", where xxxx are strings like "1102&DEV_0004&SUBSYS_00011103&REV_04".
Under each of these folders will be another folder with a long numerical name. Open each folder and look for the "DeviceDesc" which matches the hardware you are trying to install - in this case "IEEE 1394 controller".
HIGHLIGHT THE ENTRY "VEN_xxxx" for that device and select 'SECURITY'-'PERMISSIONS' FROM THE WINDOW TOP MENU and then tick "Allow" for "Full Control".
Close REGEDT32, reboot, and then do a normal install. If the install again provides an error message, recheck the permissons in regedit again. For some reason regedit does not always save the new permissions.

Boy, am I glad you posted that thread. I've been going crazy for 4 days over this. I bought an HP Pavilion laptop that shipped with XP Home, but I needed it for development, so I installed Windows Server 2003 over it after having run a successful system compatibility check. Of course I made sure I had all the drivers for the various components of my system beforehand... except for USB 2.0 drivers, which I assumed were included in any newer operation system.
As luck would have it, everything is up and running except for my USB2 ports. During the installation, setup would complain that it couldn't copy the files usbcamd.sys, usbcamd2.sys, and usbintel.sys. After installation, Windows would recognize my USB devices, but upon installation, fail with an error "The data is invalid". I wasn't sure if this had to do with my PhoenixBIOS (I once had a similar issue on an older PC) so I updated the BIOS with the latest one from hp.com. No success. I'm damn glad I found this post - this seems to describe the problem I've been experiencing. Incidentally, I *DO* have a Texas Instruments controller.
I'll try your suggested fix tonight when I get home, and pray that it works!!!

Beef people's advice has been posted before here by others with mixed results for firewire cards.
There are a whole bunch of patches, fixes and good old fashioned "it suddenly started working" on this type of problem.
If it doesn't work for you, post again, we have a great long list of things to try :D

Unfortunately, BP's suggestion didn't work in my case. I modified the permissions on those reg keys, restarted, reinstalled my USB drivers, got the same error message, went back to look at the permissions, saw that they had reset themselves, set them again, this time unchecking the box that read "Allow permissions from parent to propogate this item..." then uninstalled my USB objects from my Device Manager, restarted, then allowed windows to recognize them and install them automatically, without any luck. I went back to review the permissions on the registry keys yet again, only this time my changes were intact. I'm fresh out of ideas. Can you think of anything else to try?
Again, I'm running Windows Server 2003. My USB and FireWire ports are the only objects giving me difficulties. If there is something I need to change in my BIOS to enable USB devices, please advise. I don't know how to do that, since, when I tried, the location where I would set these settings was no immediately obvious to me. It's a PhoenixBIOS.

I would start by looking for a bios upgrade, follow that by installing the motherboard drivers for the motherboard.
2k3 is a server os with most services off by default. You should check the appropriate services are started or installed.
Are you talking about a specific device installation, or the usb controller/hub itself?
Hi, thanks for trying to help me. In my device manager, neither the USB hub/controller nor the individual devices are listed. There are a total of 5 USB instances (all of displaying yellow warning icons) listed but not one controller. I only have 3 visible USB ports on my laptop. I'm assuming there's one internal USB port, as that's pretty common. That would lead me to reason that the other unrecognized device is in fact the controller itself. Is there any way that could be the case?Quote:

In bios setup, are the usb features enabled? How about assign an irq for usb?
