poor phone lines

I Have A Lucent Win Modem Running Version 8.28.0.0 On Windows Xp I Can Only Connect At 26400 Sometimes 28800 I Have Added A String S38=0-v90=0 I Would Like To Know If There Are Any Other Strings Or Settings I Can Use That Might Help My Down Loads And Help With Slow Web Page Loading I Know At One Time Someone Gave Me A String That Really Helped With My Old Computer And A Few Tweaks But It Was On A Windows 98 Pc If Anyone Can Help Me Tweak My Connection Or My Modem Due To Poor Phone Lines Please Help Thank You

Your modem is connecting using v.34 protocol instead of v.90. Often that means poor line conditions, or telco equipment in the signal path which prevents negotiating a v.90 connection. You can play with the strings, but if the cause is external there is not much you can do. Take a look here: http://modemsite.com/56k/index.asp. The connect speeds you are getting are fairly good for v.34.

The string you have entered (s38=0 -v90=0) disables v.90 (up to 54,666 bps) connection. While this may improve you v.34 connection, you will be unable to connect faster that 33,600 bps. I suggest you clear out the string. The AT command reference is available here: http://www.agere.com/client/docs/v90atcom.pdf

It appears that you've got the port speed on your modem's com port set to 38,400 - you should up this to 115,200.

You could also try upgrading to the 8.30 driver here: http://www.agere.com/client/docs/modem830.exe

well i downloaded the new 8.30 driver lastnight if it did anything it slowed it down changed the port speed back to 115,200 and took the string out if i remove the string all i get is a 19000 connection speed and if i am lucky i might hit 26400 it seems to work more stable with the string getting a steady 26400 but what i am really after is keep it from doing is when i go to a web page it stalls out and and keeps trying it will stop reciveing and start over and over makes it very slow dont know if i am getting a fall foward or a fall back someone gave me a string on my old pc after looking at what i posted of my modem doing i checked out the other at command link you sent me but hey thats a little to much for my little head to work with any answer is better than what i can come up with ...lol

Im not sure if this is whats happening in your case but I had this issue when I was on dial up. The phone line that I was on was digital based. Apparently the phone company was running out of lines and decided to use digital lines to increase the number of available lines they could use. Atleast thats what the phone company told me.

Becuase of the digital lines, you may be limited in your connection speeds.

Based on your description, it would appear your phone line is not capable of a v.90 connection. In that case, you are correct that the string will give you a more stable v.34 connection. There's not much you can do about the stalls. You might try having the telco check out your outside line, although they generally will not guarantee good data, only good voice. If you can connect directly to the network interface, you also might want to rule out internal wiring as the cause.

well i have had the telco here and they ran a test and said it was ok but the guy that did the test said it was not that good for a internet connection that i would not get over a 31200 connection and they did not have to do anything about that the only chance i had was to wait till they put in all new wires so its no doubt about my poor phone lines i was just seeing if i could get all i could out of what i got like a string or some other settings i dont know about .

If you have a poor phone line, the noise will not allow the connection to go faster... even if it did, it would be resending the data more often because the noise corrupts the data packets.

Sorry there is no real way around a bad phone line.

Just a few things that can help in speeding up your connection.

Make sure to put modem on a line by it self, the shorter the wire from the wall to the modem the better. Optimal length is 3 foot

Do not plug-in phones, answering machines, or anything else into the modem.

The modem tends to read the Wire Length from the inside of these devices.

done all of that my line going to the pc to the phone is a high data tranfer line very $$ and it still didnt change one thing put all new wiring from the room the pc is connected to the main teloco box and still no change i have done it all even got a seprate line just for the pc and it only has my pc hooked in it all it comes down to is old lines that run from me to the main tranfer box its about 3 miles with 4 bridges in it off the main trunk and that i was told would kill you with line noise so until they do something about that i am stuck with 26400 unless i go to sat and it cost like 60.00 a month and its not worth it for me plus the 599.00 for the system you have to buy i know i there is not much i can do about my connection speed but i would love to get all i can out of 26400 did a few speed checks and only showed i was doing a 21600 and another showed 24000
