Gateway notebook with IBM hdd
I have a customer's laptop here with a hdd doing what sounds like the click of death. Soon after the ticking starts, the system stops responding. It is NTFS IBM Travelstar 20gb hdd running Win2K SP4.
When I slaved the drive to my bench in an attempt to retrieve the data, it worked flawlessly, allowing me to save roughly 4gb of data to my drive. It also let me scan and remove four virus files.
When I put it back in her laptop, the clicking started again.
I am thinking either voltage or heat. Machine is P4 1.6ghz, so I figure the thing will take any laptop drive, and see the entire capacity.
But I don't want to buy a drive for it, and find out that it was a heat/power related issue resulting in the same sort of failure.
Anyone ever encountered this? The machine has a year of warranty left on it, and I think she should let me burn her data onto a DVD, and send it into Gateway, but she needs it sooner than that. I don't want to dig in deep enough to void the warranty. The drive comes out with one screw, but I am unsure how to get at the heatsink/fan, and do not wish to void warranty in the attempt.
Am tired...open for suggestions.
Thanks
