Updates fail to install

I am trying to install the latest updates to a user's machine (signed in as Admin). The download works fine, but the installation fails. No error number to look up. Any advise? Thanks

Check the windows update directories and clean em out
Both under windows and under program files. It may help. Also check the temp dir clean that out as well

Did all that, still have a problem. Checked the update log and checked with the knowledgebase regarding the error number, tried every method on the knowlegebase article and still no joy. Previous updates were successful in the past. Argh.

tried safe mode? Tried downloading them separately and running them standalone? Qchain?

Yes, tried downloading separately and disabled antivirus without luck. I will try safe mode tomorrow (if it's not being used--it's a lab machine). Edit: What is Qchain? Wow! That's great, I just read about it. It's been what I've been looking for in regard to my Windows servers!! :thumbs:

I hope you have a registered version of your Windows XP. Because I've had problems similar to this before, with my friends' computers.

Unregistered/pirated versions of Windows XP will not work properly with Windows Update.

Perhaps you should check this out.

Yes, it is a resgistered version (this is a work environment and on a Army base!). Anyway, latest update has now been installed. I had configured updates to download automatically (before it was done manually).

I was having this same issue, and I figured out a workaround that is a pain in the *ss, but it allowed me to at least get the updates installed. I would be interested to know if anybody has ever resolved this issue, and how they did it.

I thought I had posted what I did..hmm..Anyway, I noticed that updates weren't configured to download automatically, so I configured updates to do that. The next day when I came in, the downloads were downloaded, so I installed and received no errors.

I'm havenign a porlbem similar to this one. A freinds computar will not take the patches that i try to install. It jsut sits there and be's. never isntalls anyhting.
