56K modem wont work ?
I had an HSP 56K internal modem that worked in my old m/board. I put it in my new one and it worked for a while, then stopped. I put in my 2nd PC (exactly same h/ware) and it worked for a while, then stopped. I bought a lucent winmodem, it doesn't work. I took them to my ISP and they worked, no prob. They go through the whole connecting, authorising phase and then say unable to connect. No problems with my 33.6 though. I am running win98SE on an AMD K62-500, Gigabyte m/board. Any ideas ? Could it be my tel line (my line supplier says its not) ?

Yoda, those sort of problems can stem from outdated drivers, or irq conflict or sharing.
Your modem should not share an irq with anything except possibly pci steering. Windows may say no conflicts - but there is!
Post full details about your modems - FCC ID etc if you want help getting newer drivers ;)

Try removing your modem info in safe mode ,reboot , and go into CMOS settings , disable COMM1 and COMM2 (if you aren't using them ), the settings may also say Serial 1 and Serial 2 . Save the change and reboot ,Windows should find and reinstall your modem , and hopefully it will work. Also do as NooToo says and get the most current drivers for your modem. Have a look here for drivers and a lot more info...

Um, these modem don't seem to use a Comm port (I know they must be...) Windows reports only com1 & 2, but the modemsare reported to be on 3, 4 or 5, which don't exist. I have downloaded the latest drivers, doesn't help. The old drivers for the HSP worked originally, so I should think they would still work anyway. The Lucent has worked on these drivers in other machines. I think it probably could be a conflict of some sought, but Windows is not very helpfull when it comes to finding it. Although, as I said, when I took it to my ISP's tech support centre they worked with out a prob, so maybe my line is the problem ?

Sounds like you're having a problem authenticating you're user name and password. If your modem is on comm 2 or 3 leave it alone. Call your ISP and tell them this, they should have a designated ISP for trouble shooting dial-up connections, ask them about this, I know of a few in my area that do this. You could also try clicking on My Computer, click on dial-up networking, make a new connection, and make a new connection. I've found sometimes the information to your connection changes for some unknown reason. Worth a try.

Also, it seems to dial the first couple of digits correctly, then it "drags" out the dialing eg: . . . _ _ _
