SP2 and Fast user switching?

Hi All -

finally got around to putting SP2 on my home machine (winXp Pro). Now when I am logged on and try to switch users (winkey +L) the display "dies" (black screen but monitor is still on/not in powersave).

I haven't seen any compliants of SP2 hosing fast user switching but was curious if anyone has seen similar behavior.

I'm running XP Pro fully patched, have run/updated spyboy S&D and have AV running. I haven't changed any of my powersave options in BIOS or XP (always on, monitor off after 20 min, no hibernation). Video card is a fairly new plain vanilla radeon 9500 and I'm running 32bit color @ 1024x768 - monitor is a 4 year old CTX.

If no one has any better ideas I'll roll back to the restore point In created before installing and see if it really is SP2 or not.

Have not seen that problem with sp2, but who knows? If you roll back, let us know if it worked..

Windows - L is Lock Workstation.

I don't believe Fast User Switching is enabled anymore under SP2. Besides - who wants to? Log out, log in.

I am still running sp2 rc2 and fast user swithing is still an option.
Right though about the ability to do that. It is one of the first things I always turn off.

kpataska had a right idea.

Windows Key+L will lock your computer if you are connected to a network domain, or switch users if you are not connected to a network domain.

Here are other reasons it might not work:

Insufficient memory
For Fast User Switching to work properly, Windows XP must have at least 64 MB of RAM. Although this is a defined minimum, Microsoft states that the system must have at least 120 MB of free RAM or XP will deactivate Fast User Switching. This can especially be a problem if the system shares video memory with main memory. In addition, for Fast User Switching to work properly, the currently logged on user may have to exit a few programs.

Domain membership
Fast User Switching will not work if you're using Windows XP Professional and the computer is a member of a network domain.

Third party programs
Third-party programs, such as the Novell client and the Citrix client, replace the Microsoft Graphical Identification and Authentication file (Msgina.dll). Fast User Switching requires Windows XP's original Msgina.dll file. Check third-party applications to see if they replace this file.

Incompatible applications
Even though Fast User Switching is supposed to allow one user to keep applications running while another borrows the computer, some applications aren't compatible with this feature. You can use the Windows Application Compatibility Toolkit.

Thanks for all the suggestions, I have not rolled back SP2 yet because I wasn't 100% sure that was the root of the problem. I did change my graphic settings (lowered the refresh rate on the monitor and changed to 16 bit color) and noticed that it would work if I did "logoff" instead of "switch user". I am going to update the catalyst drivers to see if that makes a difference.

Believe me I would turn it off if I could (WTF - it needs terminal services...yikes!) but the Boss (wife) likes it a lot so I am stuck with it. the machine is not part of a domain and none of the software you mentioned is installed.

I actually kind of hope the monitor is going bad...I've been wanting a LCD

video driver seemd to be the prob...

Hmmm....I uninstalled the video driver and installed the latest catylst (however you spell it) drivers and all appears to be well.

Is yours set to manual in services.mrc? (it should be).

And if you have a bunch of kids with their own accounts, this feature comes in REAL handy.

Reading this thread jinxed me. Now my faster user switching went on the blink!!!

You don't have SiSoftware Sandra installed do you? SHE was my problem with fast user switching. I disabled her and she didn't like that I suppose.
