Okay, I'm gonna be building a new system for myself in the next month or so, and I'm still undecided between AMD & Intel. My decision is going to come down to whichever CPU has the best motherboard to build on. I've always been an Abit & Asus kinda guy, but I'm open to suggestions.
So, which motherboard do y'all recommend for both the Athlon 64 & the P4? Speed, stability, and overclockability are what matters most to me.
Jeez,.. it's like the master asking the students for opinions. But I've always favored Asus.
Intel boards have come a long way. Asus is almost always a good choice. But, you do a lot of gaming, so you may want to consider an Athlon for speed. This one should have plenty of opinions, though.
It's all about the Intel 925x chipset mobos with PCI Express from now and into the future. If you got one Cobra,.. you would be a pioneer of this great high performance technology.
For that Athlon64 CPU, take a look at Abit's KT8 series (HardOCP recommended) or even MSI's nForce3 boards.
That's where I'm headed.
Yeah, but I've been out of the retail game for so long, and haven't really messed with anything but video card upgrades in my current rig, I'm out of touch. The school system I work for offers the Dell Employee Purchase plan, and I've considered going that route for a new system, but I'd prefer to build my own as long as I have two working hands.Quote:

Intel board also, if you have the cash to get one. I love my D875PBZ, but If you are getting everything new, the the 925 and a high end PCI Express
It depends on which side of the fence you sit on.
I have a P4/2.8HT on an MSI/Intel chipset board, and an Athlon 64 on a Asus K8T800 chipset motherboard. Each has advantages and disadvantages and at this point I'm hard-pressed to say which I prefer. Both have decent video cards (nVidia 5950), 1gb of the fastest RAM the motherboard will take, and identical 2x80gb Maxtor SATA drive arrays.
The HT processor seems to perform better than the A64 with Virtual PC/Virtual Server tasks, but the A64 seems to just out-muscle the HT processor when running one or a few programs flat-out.
MSI all the way dude!

If it's for work,.. then a Dell might not be a bad way to go just to keep everything standard. But for home,.. please oh please oh please don't get a proprietary machine. For home use, it's hand built or nothing. You have offered so much wisdom and help to me and others over the years and it would be such a shame to see such tech greatness end up with a Dell for home use. Can you imagine,.. Cobra with a Dell?
