Say you have downloaded an ISO image of WinXP (or Win2003, Visual Studio, etc...) together with the installation key. How would you prove that it's a licensed copy since you have no physical "something" (other than going to the website that you have downloaded from)???
While I'm no expert on Product Licensing. If you downloaded the software from the internet without paying for it. It usually either a demo, or pirated.
All M$ software displays a EULA upon the intallation.
Almost all M$ software requires a CD-Key, and some requires Acivation before using.
Basically if you didn't pay for a licesnse, it's not licensed.
If you purchased the software from an internet site, you will recieve the licesnse from the site via email or other means.

then you need nothing. Proof of payment to the MSDN program would be sufficient, and for students proof of being a student at a participating education institution is enough.
however if you got it from somewhere else you can't realy prove anything, so MS will assume that you stole it. Which they do ayway becase to them everybody is guilty until you come up with that COA
If the above suggestions don't do it for you, call up MS and ask them directly.
The person is in a student program, and the email just shows what has been "purchased" and the purchase price (free). There was no point in paying the shipping for the CD.
Then everything is kosher, it seems.
A coa ought to turn up in the post ? until which time I'd hang on to any relevant bank or credit card payment details 'just in case'..
Mind you I can think of lots of places to buy COA's from despite this bit

I highly doubt that anything will be mailed. And since the price was free, there is no credit card receipt (and as we know even a payment receipt is not a real proof). I know someone who had the CD shipped, but from what I know all she got was the hologram CD with the S/N sticker on the sleeve (not even a jewel case...). Anyway, there has been no problem activating the downloaded software.

The university enrolls in the program and then gives their students an account. Then the students can get their "free" stuff. But students pay $20k/year ... :sad:
