Also, start by removing all nonessential components in the PC, any sound, modem, NIC, disconnect all USB and LPT items, including any drives such as zip drives, (internal or external).
Also, let the XP CD do the formatting of the disk, don’t preformat it with a boot disk. Although in theory it should work, you may have some inconsistency there that the CD can fix when you repartition the drive, and reformat it. Those options come up during the blue screen initial setup…
