Immediate logoff upon login

I'm running XP at home, and last night I rebooted my machine as it was running slow. Network especially. Well, when I logged on, I was immediately logged off. This happened with all users on the machine.

I got into "safe mode" and the same thing happened. I'm thinking virus, but not sure how to go about fixing it, since I can't log in.

I WAS able to boot off the cd and go into Repair mode which brought me to a command line, but I wasn't sure what to look for.

Any ideas?

This may require a repair of windows. It can be done from the CD, not from the recovery console, you have to continue past the option to enter the recovery console (continue setup), and then you will see an option to repair the existing installation.

You’ll want to apply all the windows updates immediately, as the cause of this is probably a vulnerability that needs to be patched. Also, update, or install a quality virus protection program.

I’ve read somewhere that from the recovery console you can replace a system file (one that’s specific to the vulnerability) with one from a non infected PC, but I don’t know the specifics behind that solution. The Repair will do the same thing, and hopefully correct any other issues you may have had.

I jumped the gun on the Repair option.

I did what ya said, went further into setup, and ran repair.
