computer-related: very good hw knowledge, win-all, some unix
networking-related: NT4-2K3 admin, AD management, ms exchange, lotus domino
programming: dos batch scripts, php/apache/mysql (win), c++, vb (have programs written by me in production)
misc software: our erp system (won't name it here for obvious reasons), backup exec, adobe advanced forms, rightfax and "whatever else is needed"
plus: made a signaling system (microcontroller-based) that is interfaced with our erp (my hardware & software design).
I don't intend to leave my current employer at least for the next year. I've been getting some offers lately from recruiters, but the offered pay was less or in the best case marginally higher than what I make now... so I'm just probing the market now to know what to expect.
I would say 30-35K to start with a raise to about 40K, give or take, after the first year. Also, my area isn't a large population, maybe 60,000, but the cost of living is very low.
must be a very, very low cost of living there.. a college graduate starts at some 40k in my area.Quote:

considering the above why the hell do i still feel uderpaid??? maybe i should just be happy and stop looking elsewhere? hmmm....
Jeez. Now I know why I live/work in California. With that kind of experience, I would say you'd be worth at LEAST $50K here. I mean,.. $30K is considered poverty level people. C'mon. Even I make more than that. LOL.
I mean,.. if I had a college degree and/or certs to go with my years of experience, I would be making around $70 - $80K p/year. And this is ME we're talking about. I'm no rocket scientist here.
Just a thought, and I'm not sure if this helps or not,... but I went to dice.com. Typed in "desktop support" in the 408, 650 area codes for California.
This is what I got
Also,.. salary.com might have some info for you.
In my area, associate and bachelor degree IT starts between 28,000 to 35,000. But this is a rural area and cost of living is low. Sure, you can make twice that in California or somewhere, but everything costs more there too, so it all evens out in the long run.
The way to do it is to live in a rural area and commute to a big city if you can stand the drive every day!
So so true. But a long commute can be very very taxing (I know because I used to have to commute 120 miles a day many years ago). I'd rather pay more in rent personally to work close.Quote:

It is not hard at all to get into a carpool where you only drive once a week or so, providing you have a job with consistent start and leave times...........not so sure about the IT field though; I couldn't imagine calling 3 carpool mates and telling them I was going to need them to stick around an extra hour or more cause the network was down!Quote:
