Convert to MP3?

First let me preface this by saying if what I am asking about is illegal, I would understand completely if the mods delete this.

I'm new to MP3s. A co-worker plays a CD that has what must be at least a hundred songs on it. I would like to make a giant greatest hits style CD by taking store bought CDs I have, converting the songs to MP3 so that they are smaller, and then burn them to CD. I made a greatest hits CD once, but since I did not convert the songs to MP3 first, I could only fit around 20 songs on the CD. Is it possible to convert my store bought CDs to MP3? If so, are there any shareware apps that will do this? Thanks.

If you legally own the cd's, I believe what you are doing is completely legal. (Course if I'm wrong, somebody let me know.)

Anyhow, I used to use MusicMatch, but there are plenty of MP3 "rippers" available, here's a list of ones availabe on download.com.

Is that the musicmatch jukebox program? Cool as thats what I use, you can also convert the files into wav format and decide on the quality of the MP3 as well. Excellent package. Can't remember how much I paid for it, but it was worth every penny.

I use dbPoweramp. It's fast and allows for different formats as well.

I also use their player.

For damaged cds http://www.exactaudiocopy.de/

Yeah, that's it.

I use CDEX. It's good, fast and free. Musicmatch used to be good, but now it's so bloated, it is almost as bad as Real Player.

Really??................Hmmm, I should have mentioned I haven't used it in a few years, so it was a pretty old version then I'm guessing.

Nero will do it too, as will the latest version of Media Player

yeah media player 10 does a fine job and it's free. rip at 128kbps if you want to fit as many as possible on one cd. rips at 192kbps if you want them to sound better (I'm not saying 128Kbps sound bad https://forums.windrivers.com/images.../2006/04/1.gif)

PS

WMA sounds better at lower bitrates than MP3 so if the device you are planning on using supports WMA (most major brands do) I'd rip WMA at 128Kbps

I had two people ask me about this in the last three days, so I sat down and looked into it...

If you have WinXP, just open Windows Media Player, Click on Copy from CD, and make sure your options are set to MP3. Works pretty good from what I've seen.

Yeah, but you can't transfer them to other cd's and computers to be played can you??

sure you can. just go in to tools/options/copy music (tab) and uncheck the "copy protect music" box.

the files will be playable and transferrable anywhere and everywhere.

cool - I've never messed with media player that way before, but I didn't realize you could do that!
