Long story short - Girlies PC is dead. Getting new PC for self and giving her a hand me down. Now, the new board I'm getting supports sata. So, here's my question.
Are the Western Digital 10,000 rpm Raptors really that much faster than the former generation of 7200 rpm drives?

I set one up recently. It was hard to tell because the PC I was using was kinda on the older side,.. but I didn't really see THAT much difference.

Its all the same, Raptors are just fast. Period.

Another thing to consider is the amount of extra money to be spent on Raptors. I mean,... they were designed to be setup in RAID which means you'll need two of them at least and that will cost a PRETTY penny. Second,.. 10K rpm is not THAT much faster really if you consider the extraordinary amount of extra money spent. I think the overall value goes to large capacity IDE. Maybe even an external USB 2.0 IDE.
However,.. it really would be cool to have a pair of Raptors and be able to brag about it. :cool:

I don't think it's worth it. $220 for a 74 gig drive??? For that kinda money you can get a 250 gig drive.
Maybe if you used it as your root drive for OS and programs, and keep a 7200rpm storage drive around. Still seems impractical.
