I got another question... Old junk

I got a question for you.
I was gonna post a thread that said somthing to the effect of 'If you got any old computer stuff you don't want (NO MONITORS) but you don't want it to go strght to a landfill, or you wan't someone to possibley get some use out of it, sent it to me. E-mail me for more infomation'

I'd use them to play with and experiment with.

Would that be OK on the WD forum, and would it be worth it, and should I do it? and do you have any ideas on the matter?


All opinions welcome!

P.S. I would NOT sell any of this stuff. Just want stuff I can play with without being afraid if I mess it up, I'll have to pay for it('cause I ain't got much money)

P.S.S I would also say nothing older than a P-1 or 1993

I'd donate, but I am a bit of a packrat and can never part with my unused parts. I save them all. And surprisingly, always put them to use here and there.

Btw, if you don't find anything here, you might find some cheap old parts on ebay or craigslist.

I see no problem with what you ask for Rogue, and I can understand wanting to work with hardware. Old h/w WAS different.
Jumpers, and irq's, and fine print and conflicts with everything!!!
Heck, I would start you off with a primer on 1x cd drives connected to sound cards with IDE connections. And Windows 3.1/DOS 5.1.
And, just like everyone I have ever taught (which I did at a college) about s/w, I start with DOS.

Thats part of my problem, but I made myself throw out anything made before 1993 and most of my P-I's Slightly newer stuff would not be out of the question, too.

P.S., dose anyone have any SyQuest Drive Cartarges :devil:

I would bring it to ya (I'm only couple hours from ya) , but right now I had use some of that old stuff to make me a PC since I killed the wife's and mine :sad: .

there is a "buy and sell" type secion of the forsm, free stuff could go there.

I'd help, but getting anything IT accross the border these days is near impossible becasue you cannt prove country of origin on most of it, or that country is on the bad list. eg a dell from the US cannot reenter the country becasue the DVD drive is originaly manfactured in korea.. WTF??!?!?

as to free stuff I have 2 Dell P1-166's that anyone can have.

Are they MMX? Big difference between non-mmx and mmx machines, particularly in Win95B.

Those machines heralded the light at the end of the tunnel, as far as interrupt management and such, imo. And FAT32 became available around then as I recall. Changed everything!

i just set 3 out by the curb last nite...they were gone within a couple hours. 2 P1's and a AMD 75...have no clue why i kept them so long.

they are not in all likley hood. they are currently configured with OpenBSD as network bridges with packet filtering (aka Invisible Firewalls)

I have upgraded amy wire wall to the same but based on Pentium Pro platforms (of which I also have a spare if any one wants it)

I will later have another one when I get my Proliant 3000 running to be my house hold file/print/terminal server.

Unfortunalty Tekboy Alaska is part of the US, so customs will like squash any shippment (that and do your realy want to pay shipping for junk?!)

you may of hated them, but think about this:

There is almost no one with syquest drives anymore. If I (and a buddy) start using them to transfer files, and someone we don't like gets hold of one, they in almost cerentity, won't be able to recover the data.

Obsileite(SP)=A form of secerity.

The other big problem would be getting th old mechines to me.

I see no problem with your request. To be nice, you might offer to pay people for the shipping, or at least go half-way on it.

Just remember, when you're done with that junk (tired of it or killed it) don't just dump it. There are plenty of electronics recycling centers that will sometimes even give you a little money for dead boards. There's some nasty stuff in PCBs, and they can recover it and use it again.
