Dumping IE?

well it has begun, were looking at moving the default browser corperatly over to Firefox from IE. That will be 500 less IE users in a part of the market MS still feels is inpenitrable (the corperate enviroment)

the problem with MS theory is that corpertion can't afford to do it. Given recent exploits we can no longer afford not to! The other problem is that when a Corperation goes it goes enmass. As Fire fox gains momentum in this area watch IE take a sharp dive in market share.

For those that are not coding to standards stop it! the rats are jumping ship and so will your page hits.

I'm not corporate, but, I hear ya.
Then again, I still use IE, but mostly FF now. My customers, those that I put FF on, ask what it is and never use it. The businesses, they consider it. Habits are so hard to break. At least w/corporate, the users don't have a choice.

thats sort of the point. Corperatly IT desices that its no longer safe to run IE, we flip a couple of settings in XP and IE "diapears" and only FF can be used to browse the web.

Pesonaly i dumped it a long time ago. Im just wondering how much penitration it will get in the MS strong hold of the business world.

Personaly its is now way to risky to still be using it, probaly run my self out of a job by chainging (no more slow PC full of spyware) but what what the hell, it should free up more of my time to find more ways to save the company some dimes.

I have never been a regular IE user.
Unfortunately I have had to use it occasionally to access certain sites on MS
Other then that I put up with the hassles of netscape till they got a decent browser in 7.2
I also think firefox and Mozilla have very good offerings

As to security well IE has been unsecure for years why all the fuss now?
Could it be because were tired of security vulnerabilities?
I rather think its because I dont like having a bullseye on my back.
Unfortunately alot of people target IE OE and windows

I have also used Netscape since version 1. When 4x had all the bugs I started using IE. Then 7x came out and was stable. Then on to Mozilla, and now FF.
So, IE now only when I need some of its "functionality".

What are you talking about? 4.x ruled! It's version 6 that sucked a bit fat monkey... heh, well you get the idea...

Firefox is great tho... and I dunno if you're telling the people about firefox properly cause everyone that I install it for loves it. I have a usually long winded explaination which basically says, for the time being firefox may save them money... the problem is I don't know if firefox will or can be a target for spyware or adware....

My primary browser is FF,.. however, windows updates have to be done through IE. I guess you could manually download them all individually or something. But based on what I've seen they only stream through IE.

Also,.. I'd vote, but the choice I made at my company is to use FF as a primary browser and use IE ONLY if you have to. So essentially I'm using both for my users. Also,.. there's no way I could get everyone to go solely to FF. End users in a corporate environment are starting to use it more and more, but generally they don't see the advantage and like to stick with what they know. So sad, so true.

I started as a Netscape user up unti 4.79, and then it all went to hell...AOL are some real **** holes! I went to IE and never really had any problems...in fact, I still don't have any problems on my laptop which I use IE on. I use Firefox on my main rig now, mostly just to see how it evolves.

I started installing Firefox on my customers machine around 0.96, since most of my calls are spyware related. I tell them to try and use Firefox as much as possible, and then I show them how to use the IE View extension for when things don't work. That's been a huge help in preventing common users from re-infecting themselves.

But it still causes problems, especially with the common user. Since developers have gotten lazy and coded everything to require IE, you can't really do a full switch, and even if you do you have to jump throuh flaming hoops to get their. Of course, this is from a consumer standpoint...for tech's it ain't no thang.

No problems(not for me anyway), so I dont wanna change. I have FF installed, and occasisonally use it though.

we're still IE dependant

We have a couple webpages setup by healthcare software vendors that require it. But damn do they ever work great.

At home, no problems with spyware, and I use avant browser which is basically an IE shell. I just don't like the way firefox does some things. Avant works the same way with tabbed browsing and such, but alot better.

to get around needing IE for winblows update, turn auto update on, connect it to MS site, a SUS/WUS server, or SMS or patch managment system. The IE UI is only neede if your manualy updateting.

We have found during testing that you do need IE for most web administration pages as they blow up in FF. but this is not as biga deal, only the IT dept will be in these kind of pages.

I used to use avant, but have switched to firefox. I find the opposite, I find it deals much better with tabs than avant does. Have you looked through the extensions, it does quite a bit more than avant does one you tweak it. As lame as it sounds I love the little weather network thing that displays current and future conditions in a customizable area.

I'm just lucky we hired actually intelligent people to design our websites and they display just fine in firefox. Minimal differences...

Oh and Trip... I still have customers who insist on using 4.8, I even have the offline installers on my "Blairware" CDs for it... I've convinced two of them to try firefox and haven't heard back from them yet... which for them is a GOOD thing...

We are stuck with IE as all of our software is written for IE and will not work with the competitions browser. Our programmers and designers are retards for the most part.
