How to deal with theft

How do we deal with theifes? I ask because things in my city have gone to **** over the last 3 weeks.

examples:

nearly everyone on my block had their cars broken into, 1 in 3 residences now have cars that need new locks due to screw driver usage, 1 in 5 need new windows because the locks worked, and 1 in 10 need new stereo's because they were removed with the sergical precision of affore mentioned screw driver (read new dash board) 2 vehicles will also require new stering columbs due to screw driver use on the ignition. they caught the guy, but now im worried that he might learn how to break into cars while in jail for 3 months (simple B and E & property damage becasues he could not even steal a car!)

yesterday a soon to be family had the contents of their U-Haul trailer stollen while they were staying at a motel before taking possetion of a new home here in Edmonton. Welcome to our city hand over all your stuff. the ****ty part is that this family is soon to be blessed with twins, however all of their baby stuff has been stollen, as well as the down payment on the house along with all other assets. The stress of this event has casues premature labour and things are not looking good.

I am sorry for you. I am fortunate; crime in my area is very low. It's there, but only on the news most of the time, and even then, it’s far removed from “in your face” as you’ve described it.

It's sad indeed for the new family with the twins on the way....

yeah, we should repeal the gun control laws and start registering all screw drivers, not only can you fix things with them but you can also: jimmy locks, steal cars, smash windows, and stab people.

anything can be used as a weapon, criminalizing its posetion will olny make it harder for legitimate users to own it. The real crimianls will be unaffected. (Damn Liberal goverment, Jean Cretien can burn in hell with Brian Mulrony)

Agreed gun control laws do absolutely nothing to stop criminals from owning guns.
As to the crime in the streets, fortunately I live somewhere in Canada where there is a really low crime rate.
Yes thank you John Cretien for costing me millions for a useless gun control program and by the way thanks for starting that crap about changing the definition of marriage as well and then not having the balls to stick around for the fall out.

I live in a small to medium sized city and crime is out of control. It is not safe to leave anything in your vehicles even in some of the nicer parts of town. A bar I play volleyball at had about 15 breakins in their parking lot last summer. The place is very well lit and even has a guy sitting out front all night checking ID's, and it's on the outskirts of the city in a very nice part of town.

I think first the laws should be changed. Right now it's only legal to shoot someone if your life is in danger. It should be changed so that if you catch someone in the act of stealing your stuff you can shoot them. If that doesn't stop crime we should cut off their hands when they are caught.

Is it legal to kick them out of the country? Maybe we could do that instead, send them to Russia or something and let them live in some kind of labor camp in Siberia.

Whatever it takes, I'm tired of having my crap stolen.

I hate to do it but I agree with Ya_Know. Criminals don't follow rules, that's why they are criminals.

my thought was to abbolish all prisons. if convicted we send you to some abbandond nother island (canada has enough of them). go a head leave the compound, we'll see how far you make it in the arctic. supplies will be droped in every month, at which point we pick up those that have serverd their sentence, your not there oh well.

think Escape from NY or LA but in the arctic, that wahy it dosent matter if you can swim its a long way from nowhere to somewhere in the arctic. Added benifit of no weapons otehr than what they get provided with. (shivs ect)

All over the civilised world the law works for the criminal not for the victim. Until that changes crime will only get worse.

Heh...maybe the Persians and their "Whatever you used to steal something, we cut off" rule isn't such a bad idea after all.

Similar things happened near where I live. However one of the neghibours noticed that someone was trying to steal his car and introduced his good friend Glock.45 to the thieves.. no more incidents since then.

A couple of crackheads were breaking into cars and stealing CD's and loose change in my neighborhood and as per usual the philly cops could not give a hoot less.

My bud drops me off and comes up for not 5 minutes, leaves and finds 2 guys in his car who have not bothered to check that the doors were unlocked and that the center console is not locked, but this does not prevent them from destroying a window and his center console here the CD's are. He yells, they run leaving a sneaker and prybar and screwdriver.

They came back with their buds in a beat *** car and I went out with a bat after them, and luckily my bud stopped me. I never get mad enough to hurt people but this night was different and I would have F'ed these guys up given the chance. Turns out a neighbors brother had the same thing happen and when he went to kick the crap out of the guys he got shot. Anyway, after 45 minutes and 3 call to the cops they finally came from 6 blocks away to tell us the guys were gone.

I filled the sneaker with broken glass and nailed it to the telephone pole with the screwdriver next to the truck they broke into. After that night the cops finally started patrolling our area and eventually the break ins stopped.

It just really irks me how many people have to be victimized before police can realize what's happening, get involved, get the guy and then he has to be prosecuted and he/she might only get a very short time in jail.

Despite what the pro gun lobby has to say about matters, you, I or anyone is not Judge & Jury & we have no right to go around shooting folks because we think they are doing something, innocent until proven guilty & 'due process' etc, being something I think most would accept ..

Your city could of course think about putting taxes up to pay for more police & prisons (though I'll merrilly accept Prison doesn't wok most times for most prisoners & creates worse criminals usually) if thats what it takes, rather than introduce a situation where people might think you are doing something & shoot you for it, when you very well mightn't be...

& btw an interesting statistic is just how many American police get killed & hurt with their own weapons This by way of example as I can't find a link to back me up, but the figure that sticks in my mind is 50% but that link clearly indicates the downside of introducing a gun in an effort to control matters ..
