new (still under warranty) compy's mouse locks up...?

Hello everyone, welcome to Windrivers. (gotta love that.)

Anywho, a few months ago my parents bought a new computer, which I steered them towards because it was a deal. 5-year warranty, still smelling like new plastic, and the darn optical mouse that came with it will freeze for a second or two. it's started to happen a lot more frequently, and makes playing Zuma near to impossible.

Here's the specs of this machine: HP Pavillion a620n
3200+ AMD Athlon XP Processor
(Processor speed 2.20 GHz, 512KB L2 cache, 400MHz front side bus)
512 MB PC2700 DDR SDRAM
160 GB 7200 RPM Uldra DMA HD
DVD+RW/CD-RW

Integrated Graphics with 64 MB shared video memory
XP Home SP2

The mouse is one of the red-light optical mice with the wheel and stuff, same blue and silver from HP, all stock HP, PS2 port, can't find the PS2 to USB adapter... The darn light isn't sensitive enough and doesn't stay on long enough. Yeah, it does its job, but I guess its little feet get tired and wrapped up in the spokes of its wheel...

Anywho, and also upon further inspection, I've discovered that someone in the family has an Anime addiction...hmm...

Any suggestions about the mouse???

Its ps/2 plugged to usb via an adapter ? - that's most likely the problem then. Get a mouse that doesn't need an adapter, very often they are problematical, generally I'd say to only use a converter as a stop gap to get you going etc ..

Sorry Confus-Ed, I guess I got you by your namesake ;)

It is a PS2 mouse, I mentioned an adapter from PS2-USB to maybe think that that would fix the problem or help deduce the problem.

Once again, if I'm still confusing you (which I tend to confuse everyone) [mommy says that its 'cause i'm a genious]

The mouse is a PS2 mouse, plugged into the PS2 Mouse Port on the back of the tower.

Anywho, I'm off to the local diner for coffee and cigarettes, lata!

It happens all the time dude .. I'm a bit litteral at times ;) - hence I get myself confus-ed - but this time I'll put the blame on you ! ;) :p :D

So is your "PS2 mouse, plugged into the PS2 Mouse Port " using some fancy HP driver ? - if so delete the entry from device manager (probably best doing that in safe mode) & try for a bit with just the standard ps/2 driver windows ought to find instead - very often these mice have little control programs which don't fit well with other stuff, most especially games as they are another layer of processing that your game isn't expecting to have to process..

(A note of the exact mouse model, would be handy, to back this idea up/ tear it to shreds, as the mouse mayn't load a 'fancy driver' at all !)

grr...the stupid thing keeps re-finding the drivers! tried it in safe mode/device manager 3 times...each time I think I got it, it's back!

let's see, the mouse model #'s etc: m/n MO42KOA s/n 040604489 p/n 5187-2155-Rev.B

tried a google search and came up with pages in russian...nothing in english...grr!

When/if it 'does this' (as its a common occurance & happens as a system '.inf' {the kind of file that often tells windows about hardware} ) that shouldn't 'really' have gotten updated, has ! .. a way around it sometimes, is to try & update the mouse driver (might as well stay in safe mode btw) by choosing what you want to install, so click 'install from a list or specific location' ..

You have done the usual 'anti' checks ? btw - & no other apparent symptoms ?

MS Mouse drivers/software works for HP mice...nice!

Thanks for the help and tips with this bug of a problem, I finally broke down and downloaded a new set of drivers from MS. it works well and hasn't locked up any (that I've noticed) ...but sometimes the mouse pointer moves by itself...slowly edging to the left on its own...even though the mouse itself is not moving. glitch? maybe. it's not a very common occurrance.

Anywho, I'm about to start another thread for this compy in the Windows XP post about a few other things that don't work and that I can't get to work...like Firefox or AVG. Firefox will open but it can't access the internet. I've enabled it through windows firewall and the other firewall junk that came with the compy, and also through norton firewall (they bought it before asking me if they should or not...grr. I dislike norton a/v f/w). Anywho, neither can access the 'net. so we'll see what we can do. Thanks everyone for the help!
