[RESOLVED] Scanner Problems

Have a customers usb scanner in the shop, connect a usb scanner to the computer and try to scan. I get the please connect your scanner message. Have tried updated drivers, checked for "!"'s in device mangler, tried a different make of scanner, complete removeal (including regedit) of scanner software. The computer detects the scanner is there and asks for the drivers, so it is seeing the scanner. Any ideas to fix this problem would be great!

Steve's right...not enough info. to help you out...but...

Ifthe scanner happens to be a Microtek, we've seen similar problems with them [I believe it was the X6 variant]. The problem was that we didn't know that all the times we tried to load and reload without success, we had the scanner powered up, and that was the problem. The solution [found at support.microsoft.com] was cycling the power off, then on before connecting USB.

Update:

Reflashed the bios, checked usb functionality (using joystick and digital camera - so i know both usb ports work right), used correct install procedure (power off, etc) and still will not access the scanner. Could the problem be in 'windows imaging' ?

Have you tried to connect the scanner on another system? The scanners ROM will ID itself to Device Mangler. However if the optics are not functioning correctly it will not respond.

A little more info would help to give you a better course of action.

Tested scanner on another system and it functions as it should.

I've seen some problems with USB ports that didn't give the proper voltage to the device. I've usually been able to resolve this by using a USB hub with an external power supply.

If you are having the same problem I have with the 8300 one touch usb...
It is not supported by Visioneer. A $299.00 scanner...less than one year old...ran well with windows ME. I installed 2000 professional...and found many things are not supported by Windows 2000...nor by the software comanies...no by the hdw. manufactor. Goodbye to new os and good by to all who do not support windows 2000...even Microsoft. You hear that, Bill.
Do we get to buy a new os (really another patch) from Microsoft? Some of us can not afford this situation. I am 70 years old... love computers and have spent a fortune on computers and software since about 1979... I have a learned much. One thing...read the specs on the product...and expect it to never be in use if you change OS. Anyone know a good OS to solve these problems?

However, you bring up an interesting point. There seems to be little general understanding why one would use W2K instead of Win98SE or WinME. So, most people are installing W2K without knowing why or having a plan. You've got to do your homework first: forewarned is forearmed.

Make sure usb is enabled in your BIOS. Also upgrad ur motherboard drivers. One more thing try to push the button when u turn it on and then install the drivers.
