looking to find drive for win 2000. upgraded after losing HD and can't get the dvd to run.
Hi akutny, welcome to WD forums.
Not much to go on there at all ! .. but I will tell you that w2k has all the drivers it needs natively for any cd/dvd type device to at least read..
If you can manage a bit more info maybe we can help ? try & describe your full circumstances - we aren't mind readers, just techs ;)
I had to replaced the original HD (crashed) in a dell inspiron 3200. It originally had win 98. when I got the unit going I tried to play a dvd and it came up with the message that I need a dvd decoder software to run the dvd, windows 2000 does not have a compatible dvd decoder. problem is I don't know what i am looking for on the dell site with my original system info. I tried downloading from another site, that had the diclaimer buy the disk we don't know if the download will work. didn't work.
Hi,
I am also trying to run DRD-N216 in my Inspiron 3200 under Windows 2000.
It reads CDs well but doesn't see DVDs at all. Do you have the same problem ?
There are couple of documents on DELL site regarding installation of DVD drive:
http://search.dell.com/results.aspx?...cs=&k=DRD-N216
It says that DMA must be enabled for DVD but in Win2000 driver settings I did not find anything about DMA. Did anybody manage to run DRD-N216 under Windows 2000 ?

That is normal. You need to have some software that will run the dvd ( or a hardware decoder ). Typical ones include powerdvd or windvd. those are the two I see most often but there are others i believe. What video do you have. Some ( mainly ATI but maybe others too ) have dvd software available for them.
did you get any recovery disks with the computer? Sometimes dell disks have one for applications that may or may not have something on it.
Hi Shard92,
I tried several software DVD players: PowerDVD 6.0, Cliprex DS DVD Player, WinDVD 6.0, InterActual Player, and its dedicated DELL DVD-to-go V.2.
All of them work good in my desktop but neither one sees the DVD in my DELL laptop Inspiron 3200 with DRD-N216 DVD drive. I switched from Windows 2000 to Windows ME to be able to install DELL driver for this DVD. (It is available at http://www.cdrom-drivers.com/drivers/166/166589.htm). Still no change. All players show a message asking to install a DVD disk into the drive.
When you mentioned "software that will run the dvd ", did you mean regular DVD playing software or there must be some special "hardware decoder" soft?
As for my video, I wanted to watch movies on 13.3" XGA Active Matrix Display of my laptop, preferably under Windows 2000 system, but any other system is also fine. Initially my laptop did not have a DVD drive and I purchased a compatible model on eBay.
Your answers are very appreciated.
