Try installing different drivers. HP drivers are reverse compatible so you can try installing the laserjet drivers or one of the many different laserjet II drivers on Win 98. I have had similar problems to what you are having and changing drivers has always worked for me. Good Luck and I hope this helps.

HP uses that same drivers for Win95 as in Win98:

You might try downloading the updated version and try again.
I use the same printer here in my office running Win98 without any problems at all. Do you have any additional memory installed in that printer? As you may know, the more, the better. I have a 2MB memory expansion module in mine.
If you're having problems with your fonts and such, I would suspect Office97 or whichever version you have. Also, make sure that the LaserJet Series II is set up as your default printer.
