READ: US Supreme Court deals blow to web file-sharing networks

INTERNET file-sharing services can be sued if they intend their customers to use software primarily to swap songs and films illegally, the United States Supreme Court ruled yesterday.

The judges rejected warnings that the lawsuits will stunt growth of new gadgets, such as the next iPod. The unanimous decision sends the case back to a lower court, which had ruled in favour of file-sharing services Grokster and StreamCast Networks on the grounds that the firms could not be sued.

The justices said there was enough evidence of unlawful intent for the case to go to trial.
