DVI Video problems.

I've recently moved from an analog monitor to a new digital flat panel (samsung 930B). Since this move, any video that i play on the screen shows up as a black box, the audio however continues to play.

The very interesting part, if i connect the 15 pin analog connector, I can view those exact same videos without any problems what so ever. I've also tried this with the default catalyst drivers without any change of effect.

The only exception to this rule appears to be DVD movies played from DVD, these play fine.

Edit: it also pears that anything that quicktime can play, will play fine.
mpeg, wmv, divx however won't.

I'm using:
Samsung 930B DFP
Radeon 9600 Pro(omega 2.6.53 drivers)
windows 2003
Duallink DVI-D cable connecting them.

So your saying that the video card is limiting the playback?

Then how come an mpeg will playback on quicktime player with DVI, where as the exact same video will not play back in WMP/ATI player?

I'm not saying anything... just that seemed to imply that there are different rules for dvi playback.

so it would seem, Techz seems to think it has to do with the rendering engine (d3d vs software) I'll give that a whirle tonight when i get back home.

IT apears to be an issue with video overlay, I downloaded media player classic, disabled the overlay and it plays fine.

Going to investigate further, for a permanent solution, but this apears to work for now

it apears to be an issue where the primary display is the only one capable of video overlay. since the dvi is classified as a secondary.

ooooh... ok that's one for my database since I am hoping to get a 19" lcd dvi input soon. I wonder if that issue will surface with my plan - my card has only a DVI output (I currently use dvi/dsub converter) and the display was going to be DVI only. Be interesting to find out.

So then use clone mode when you are playing video or just swap around what windows thinks of as the 'primary monitor' - all this behaviour is 'by design' (not that they bother to tell you what's supposed to happen) - but all these 'dual cards' are only capable of video overlay on one independent monitor at once ..

I tried changing the primary display in windows, no go. I'm only able to clone the tv-out(s-video). I guess i need to do more mucking...

Have you checked you've got the setting ticked for this ? One option in the drivers *is* 'black box' ..

Oh hang on a minute, my mistook, you are using Omega drivers ? Its not in them (sorry dude, must read more carefully!) .. The bit I'm talking about is in the catalyst control centre (I use it, even though it means having '.net' enabled, as I've got 2 monitors, & it lets me switch between, 'clone', what ati call 'theatre' & 'stretched') & I know this all works, as I've got a 9600 card, with both analogue & digital monitors attached, & until I 'cracked' & decided the catalyst control centre actually had a purpose (other than to look flash), I too couldn't figure out how the hell to get video to behave the way I expected ..

Have you gone into the Displays Manager and made sure that the DVI output is your primary display?
