active x error
http://tinypic.com/jgidti.jpg
I still get this after spyware scans, virus scans, highjackthis. ActiveX is enabled in I.E. I get Active desktop errors if I have a picture for the desktop but not if it's a solid color. I can't think of anything else to try, any ideas?

It is a virus/spyware issue. Delete all the files in all the temp folders. Turn off system restore. I can't remember exactly which one found it, but I ran spybot, ad-aware in safe mode. I think I also used trendmicro.com for an online scanner. Safe mode with networking. After it is clean, immediatley update Windows.

I've done exactly that...that's why I'm at wits end. Win update doesn't function either. I finally got rid of the active desktop by tweaking the reg.
I'll go through it all one more time and then :flame: the drive. Thanks MPCP.

Between running Ewido in safe mode and the reg hack I found it's gone. Thanks for the insight MPCP!
